Shoreline Falls Short in Tacoma Crossover Opener

D3A_5740Tacoma, WA – The Dolphins continued their pre-season road trip around the state of Washington with an opening round 111-89 defeat at the hands of Southwestern Oregon Community College in the annual Tacoma Crossover Tournament. Both teams had no problems scoring the ball as the first half score finished 59-45 in favor of the Lakers.  Neither team found their way to the charity stripe as the teams combined to shoot only 5 free-throws total in the opening period. While Shoreline converted nearly 40% of their shot attempts from the field, Southwestern Oregon capitalized on just over 54% of their field goal tries.

Shoreline played without their top two scorers in Earl Thompson (So, Las Vegas, NV) and Bronte Corbray (Fr, Seattle, WA) who on the season average 25 and 17 points respectively, making up close to 50% of the Dolphins average scoring per night. Having to compensate for that much offensive production would be a tall task for any NWAACC team. Though these moments in a season can present opportunities for other guys to step up. Dean “Bulla” Veina (So, Waipahu, HI) did just that in leading Shoreline with 20 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

Artez Scharer (So, Seattle, WA) tossed in 16 points to go along with a team-high 7 rebounds. Shoreline received some nice bench production from Austin Jordt (Fr, Big Fork, MT) who chipped in with 11 points in only 17 minutes of court time.

Ryan Reyes (Fr, Kalihi Valley, HI) and Alex Horning (Fr, Shoreline, WA) both contributed 10 points on the night.

The second half saw Southwestern Oregon continue to pull away as they maintained their double-figure lead to victory. The Lakers were led by Dexter Williams’ game-high 28 points on 13 of 17 shooting.

Shoreline finished shooting a shade over 37% from the floor while Southwestern Oregon hovered over 50% for the game.

Shoreline Community College (2-6) continues playing in the Tacoma Crossover Tournament with a second round match-up against Wenatchee Valley Community College who the Dolphins have previously beaten already this season. That contest was Shoreline’s 1st game of the season and ended in a 85-71 victory.
