It’s official! The Shoreline Women’s Soccer Team has made the postseason! The Lady Phins will host the first round of playoffs on Wednesday, November 5th.  Game time will be at 12:30pm at Twin Ponds Field. The ladies earned the right to host the first round by finishing second place in the Northern Region standings.  The Phins hold the tie-breaker over 3rd place Edmonds, which would only come into play if this weekend’s match versus #1 Everett ends in a loss.

According to head women’s coach Aaron Howe the women have been playing quality soccer.  He notes the improvement in the defense since last year has helped the team to their highest placing since 2009.

The play of sophomore keeper Melissa Schuetze has solidified that defense.  Schuetze currently has 70 saves, putting her 13th in the league, and 7 shutouts, tying her for 3rd overall.  Howe has been impressed with her growth since last season, describing her play as  “phenomenal” and “solid.”  He shares that in the wins against Whatcom & Edmonds earlier this season, Melissa made multiple big saves, including one on a late penalty kick, that gave the Phins the W’s.  The team defeated Whatcom in Bellingham for the first time since 2011.

Two other cornerstones for the Phin defense are sophomore Mackenzie Bolton and freshman Mercedee Smith.  Howe has high praise for these two key defensemen: “Mercedee is a workhorse and dominates in the air.”  Mackenzie is “highly intelligent and extremely technical who plays with a lot of heart.”

On the offensive side, sophomore Hayley Warren leads the league in goals scored with 25 so far this season.  Howe calls her the best finisher in the league. Warren co-captains the squad with freshman Chelsea Foster, who is known for her pregame inspirational pep talks.

Athletic Director Steve Eskridge adds, “We are extremely proud of our Women’s Soccer team for taking second place in the Northern Region of the Northwest Athletic Conference, and excited to see them advance in the playoffs.  Way to go Lady Phins!”

Come support your Lady Phins this Saturday for Sophomore Night.  The Phins host the Everett Trojans.  The women play at 5:15pm with the men following at 7:30pm.
