The Surf Report – March 23

|  THE SURF REPORT | SHORELINE, WASHINGTON | ISSUE 16 | VOLUME 1 |

Rough weekend for the baseball team as they escaped the rain and headed over the mountains to face Walla Walla and Blue Mountain.  First stop was Walla Walla for a double-header against the Warriors.

Sophomore Henry McAree got the ball for the first game against the Warriors.  The Shorewood HS grad threw 6 complete, allowing 1 run on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 9.  Max Winklehake came on in relief at the top of 7 and the Warriors pounce, scoring two before Brady Benson ends the inning on a throw-down to second, catching a runner on an attempted steal.  In the 8th, Drey McInnes gets the Phins one closer with a solo home run, making it 1-3 going into the 9th after the defense goes 3-and-out.  Sam Ballwag draws a walk to start off the inning, followed by a strike out and Kyler Kedroske being hit by the pitch.  2 on, 1 out top of 9 and Jordan Ridley singles to score Ballweg but the rally falls short as the next batter hits into a game-ending double-play.  Warriors win 3-2.

In game 2, the Warriors use three 4-run innings to win big 13-3.  The Phin runs come in a big 6th inning.  The bases load via walk and 2 batters hit by pitches.  Colin Shilton hits into a fielders choice, scoring Perry Pipkin, leaving runners on 1st & 3rd.  Bases fill again with yet another walk.  Dylan Wade & Colin Shilton score on 2 straight wild pitches, but 3 is all the Phins could muster.

On Sunday, the Phins met Blue Mountain.  In game 1, Phin hitters put up 6 hits but couldn’t produce any runs against the T-wolf starter Eric Purcell.  Purcell racked up 7 strikeouts against Shoreline, allowing 4 hits in 7 innings.  ‘Wolves win 6-0.  Jorgen Arnesen goes 2-4 in that game.  Brandon Gustafson comes on in relief in the 4th, stymieing the Wolf offense, allowing 1 run on 3 hits in 5 innings.

In the final game of the weekend, Shoreline starts strong, scoring 1 in the 1st on a Brent Firth triple after Peter Pennylegion reaches on an error.  After that, the T-Wolf pitching staff shut down the Phins, with four pitchers allowing only 2 more hits and striking out 7.  For the Phins, Garrett Stephens made his 2nd start, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 3 and walking 4 in 5 innings.  Max Dwyer took the loss, allowing 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 4 and walking 1.  Blue Mountain gets the win 3-1.

Today’s scheduled games against Grays Harbor have been cancelled due to finals at GHC.  The teams will meet tomorrow for a single in Lacey at the RAC at 4pm.

First home game will be Sunday, April 5th at 1pm against Bellevue at Meridian.
