On Saturday, September 12th the Shoreline Soccer programs hosted Peninsula College to kick off North Region play. Women’s Soccer opened the doubleheader with a clash against the nationally ranked Women’s Soccer program of Peninsula College. The Pirates came into the game ranked 7th in the latest National Soccer Coaches of America Division 1 Junior College Soccer Poll. The Phins battled hard and despite giving up an early goal in the 7th minute were executing their game plan. Late in the first half the Phins began to take control of the game and dominated possession and created chances all the way through the first 10 minutes of the second half. Unfortunately Peninsula scored against the run of play in the 59th minute off a set piece. This second goal put the game out of reach for the Phins who fell 0-2 despite a great team effort. The Phins are now 2-2-1 on the season and 0-1-0 in the North Region standings.
The Men’s Soccer team finished off the doubleheader against Peninsula looking for their first win of the season. Both sides created solid chances early but were unable to put any home leading to a scoreless first half. The second half was just as open and a Phin attack forced a Peninsula player to handle in the box resulting in a penalty kick for Shoreline. Jorge Varela stepped up and put the ball in the back of the net to give the Phins a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute. The last half hour saw the Pirates from Peninsula pour on attack after attack, but each time Phin Goalkeeper Jerry Reyes-Ortega was up to the task. Reyes-Ortega would finish with 12 saves, many of them spectacular and from point blank range. However, his hroics would not be enough as Peninsula would finally find the back of the net on th elast kick of the game in the 4th minute of added time. The Phins would have to again settle for a draw taking their record on the season to 0-0-4 and 0-0-1 in North Region play.
Next up the teams travel to Mt. Vernon on Wednesday, September 16th to take on Skagit Valley College. The Women kick off at 2:00pm with the Men following at 4:15pm.
