The Surf Report – September 28th

Shoreline Community College had another busy weekend of North region play. Catch up on all of the Fall sports action below:

Women’s soccer hosted the Orcas of Whatcom Community College on Saturday, September 26th. Shoreline came into the game tied with Edmonds for 3rd place and the final NWAC playoff spot. Neither team created much in the first half as only 3 shots combined were on goal. Caty Miller’s goal 9 minutes into the second half forced a more open game. Miller was the first to the ball after a Phin free kick and slotted her goal past the Whatcom goalkeeper. More open play meant more action for each goalkeeper. Shoreline’s CnXqwG01au0IOSfE971yC6JPT9dfUQDVW8Sm0Yudq9IAmanda Aversano was forced into 5 saves to protect the Phin lead throughout the second half. Shoreline held onto their one goal lead to come away with the important 3 points.

With the win, and Edmonds’ loss to Peninsula, the Phins take sole possession of 3rd place exactly one- third of the way through region play. Next up the Phins host NWAC #1 Peninsula College at 12:15pm on Wednesday, September 30th.

The Men’s Soccer team also hosted Whatcom with similar implications. The Phins came into the game trailing Edmonds by one point for the 3rd playoff spot in the North region. A mostly quiet first half exploded into an up and down second half. The Orcas struck first with a goal in the 59th minute. They doubled their lead in the 65th minute. Shoreline answered right back. A corner kick from Yovanni Martinez fell to the feet of Mike Mercado who blasted the ball to the back of the net. However, the goal was disallowed after the line judge deemeCgk1xlIHI2SzbGmSbAJbVsm2I6DHIKL5rdsL8m6OZfcd the ball had gone through the side netting. In the 74th minute Jerry Reyes-Ortega saved a penalty only to see the Orcas react first to the ball and push their lead to 0-3. Shoreline would pull a goal back in the 81st minute as fittingly Mike Mercado finished a corner. It wasn’t enough as Whatcom would leave with a 0-3 victory.

The Phins remain one point behind Edmonds for the final playoff spot in the North region. Next up for Men’s soccer is a home clash with NWAC #2 Peninsula College at 2:45pm on Wednesday, September 30th.

Volleyball had their first North region road game on Friday, September 25th at Bellevue College. Bellevue came into the W4uSe_ZMa4WjaqCATvHesVTQhjLk20Hdtj9Ri-zaJgggame ranked #6 in the NWAC while Shoreline was just outside the rankings at #9. Bellevue took the first two sets 20-25. With their back to the wall the Phins fought back and took the next two sets (25-20, 25-21). In the fifth and deciding set the Phins came up just short falling 7-15. Kristina Nielsen led the Phins with 14 kills. Carlie Howard finished the game with 35 assists.

Volleyball travels to Bremerton on Wednesday, September 30th to take on Olympic College and hosts Whatcom Community College on Friday, October 2nd at 7pm.
