The Surf Report – November 3rd

| THE SURF REPORT | SHORELINE, WASHINGTON | ISSUE 17 | VOLUME 2 |

Men’s and Women’s soccer took to their home pitch for the last time this season on Saturday, October 31st. Each team came into the game with playoff scenarios. Catch up below:

6NVS_KpS2f3n2DoRUjA88AcjppmofX10eq5S9il2f6EWomen’s Soccer hosted Whatcom in the first game of the soccer doubleheader. The Phins came into the match trailing Whatcom by 2 points for 3rd place in the North Region standings and the last playoff bid for the region. Shoreline had to win to move on while Whatcom could settle for a draw. It was evident early on that Whatcom would sit back and play for the draw. The Phins had the majority of the chances in the first half and all the pressure finally broke Whatcom in the 36th minute. Caty Miller drew a foul about 45 yards out from goal. Chelsea Foster took the free kick and took advantage of the wet weather as her shot went right through the Whatcom goalkeeper’s hands for the goal. The Phins held onto the 1 goal lead and took the 3 points to move into the 3rd playoff spot! Naza Hernandez and Amanda Aversano each had big point blank saves to combine for the 7th shut out of the year.gZycwHYKWQFlfm9id59NrEJ-xWyC3yL64LSovnDS_8Q

The Phins will travel to Bellevue College on Tuesday, November 3rd for a 7pm kick off. The game will be played at Sammamish High School. This will be the second time in four days that the Phins will face elimination and hopefully this experience will help them in their match against the West region Co-Champion Bellevue Bulldogs.

Men’s Soccer also hosted Whatcom on Saturday, October 31st. The Men’s playoff situation was a little bit muddier than the women’s coming into the match. The Phins needed to win and hope for Edmonds and Skagit Valley to lose to force a play in game against Edmonds. Angel Alcaraz was rewarded for his high work rate in the 1st half as he took a Bodi Tumurbaatar through ball and put it in the back of the net in the 28th minute. The lead didn’t last long as Whatcom scored in the 35th minute to draw the game even at 1-1. In the 62 minute Goalkeeper Jerry Ww5hKtRwTC8WTH92O2VHx6RN5hJw5zl7SzV9qf3HgUoReyes was sent off, Ivan Melchor replaced him and immediately blocked a penalty kick to keep the score even. Just as word got to the pitch that Edmonds had won their game eliminating Shoreline from the NWAC tourney the Phins gave up a soft penalty. This time Whatcom was able to finish the kick and Shoreline went down 1-2 in the 80th minute. That scoreline would remain and the Phins dropped the 3 points to Whatcom.
