Women’s Soccer Defeats Bellevue – NWAC 1st Round

The Women’s Soccer team played their second straight elimination game on Tuesday, November 3rdVmslfF-lpeKRABfUNPx6KCCCfxnmmTrMg0maNjysBsg against Bellevue College in the 1st round of the NWAC Tournament. The Phins made the tournament when they beat Whatcom on the final day of North Region play. That win secured 3rd place for Shoreline and set up the first round match up with the West Region Co-Champion Bellevue College Bulldogs.

On a cold, foggy night at Sammamish High School the Phins played some of their best soccer of the season. It was much needed as their opponent was riding a 10 game winning streak coming into the match. After a scoreless first half the Phins struck first when Forward Tayler Lime controlled the ball at the top of the 18 yard box. Lime used one touch to turn and another to blast a shot past the Bellevue goalkeeper. The 5th ranked Bulldogs did not go away quietly. In the 77th minute Bellevue put a shot off the crossbar and was first to react to the rebound, heading a goal home to draw the score at 1.

The stop helped to preserve the tie and force 20 minutes of extra time to determine the winner. In extra time goalkeeper Naza Hernandez made a huge save off the line following a deflection. Lime almost put the game away on two different occasions in extra time. First she had a near miss on a headed attempt off of a Madisen Lauer cross, then after the Bellevue goalkeeper fumbled a Chelsea Foster free kick Lime came close to getting a final touch that would’ve ended the game.

With the game still tied after 11o minutes the teams faced off in a penaltyVRqzhvZdj0KGu1O9C_7sVW0pOzIMH_UZUg6JX8gFa8o shootout to determine the winner. Foster stepped up to take the first shot for the Phins and promptly put her shot in the back of the net. Naza Hernandez made her biggest save of the night on the first Bellevue penalty. Hernandez guessed correctly diving to her left to save the Bellevue attempt. With all the momentum on their side the next four Phin shooters scored. Lime, Caty Miller, Mikayla Morgan, and Lauer all scored penalties to give the Phins the 5-3 victory in the shootout.

Lane is the champion of the South Region and currently ranked 7th in the NWAC Alaska Airlines Coaches Poll. This is the same match up in the Quarterfinals as last season when the Phins lost to Lane 1-2. A victory on Saturday would advance Shoreline to the NWAC Soccer Championships. Check back Monday for the result!
