The Surf Report – Final Four Edition

The biggest week of the Fall Sports Season is upon us and we have two great teams to celebrate. There is a lot to get to so read on and catch up on all the exciting news surrounding the Dolphins!

Women’s Soccer has been facing elimination and the end of their season since an October 31st match up with Whatcom. ThHernandezat match was the final fixture of the North Region regular season and Shoreline needed a win to move onto the NWAC Playoffs. A Chelsea Foster free kick gave the Phins a 1-0 advantage that they would not relinquish securing the 3rd seed and a playoff bid.

Shoreline opened the playoffs on the road against the co-champion of the West region the Bellevue Bulldogs. The Phins got a beautiful goal from Tayler Lime, but could not hold onto the lead and the game eventually went to penalties. In the shootout the Phins got a big save from Naza Hernandez and all 5 dormanpenalty shooters finished their attempts give the Phins a 5-3 PK win.

That brings us to this past weekend and the Women’s Soccer team’s third straight elimination game. This time the Phins traveled to Eugene, Oregon to take on the South Region champion Lane Titans. In the quarterfinals last year the Phins made this same trip, but were defeated by Lane ending their season. The Phins would not let history repeat itself. Shoreline’s defense was the story of the game as Naza Hernandez had 5 saves in goal and the Phins’ back line worked to limit the high scoring Titans from Lane. A scoreless draw through 90 minutes and 20 more scoreless minutes in extra time led to the second penalty shootout of the week for the Phins. Shoreline had their first shot saved, but Naza Hernandez stepped up and saved 2 Lane penalties. Cassidy Schlicke-Perez scored the final Phins penalty giving Shoreline the 4-3 shootout win.

moneyThe win moves Shoreline into the NWAC Championships at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila. This is the first trip to the final four since 2008. Shoreline will take on Spokane at 10:30am on Saturday, November 14th. A win in this match would give the Phins their first ever trip to the NWAC final on Sunday, November 15th at 3pm. This will be the 4th straight elimination game for the Phins and their 3rd straight match against a region champion.

The place to be this weekend is Starfire. Check back later this week as we highlight the Women’s Soccer team and our North Region Champion Volleyball team.
