Women’s Soccer Places 3rd

NazaThe Women’s Soccer team has been performing on a tight rope since October 31st. The Phins reached the semifinals of the NWAC after winning 3 straight elimination games. One of only four teams remaining the Phins took on high scoring Spokane on Saturday, November 14th at the Starfire Soccer Complex. Spokane was the champion of the East Region and ranked #3 in the final NWAC Alaska Airlines Coaches Poll. Spokane had the second best scoring team in the NWAC with 80 goals scored coming into the match on Saturday.

From the start Shoreline packed in their defense and used a high workline rate to limit the high scoring Spokane team. Rikki Quintero was tasked with man-marking the NWAC leading scorer from Spokane. The Phins’ back line of Dani Hayes, Chelsea Foster, Makenzie Matthes and Shey Thompson held strong as they took on wave after wave of Spokane attacks. Goalkeeper Naza Hernandez made 7 saves to keep the Phins drawn at 0. Through 90 minutes the game plan worked perfectly as the Spokane attack was thwarted.

The match went to extra time to be played in two ten minute halves. Seven minutes into the first half of extra time Spokane won a corner. Hernandez attacked the corner kick at her near post as a Spokane player met her in the air. Spokane was able to get a head to the ball and direct it to goal finishing the Phins season with a golden goal 0-1.

RikkiThe Phins made a great run through the playoffs defeating two different Region champions on the road to the final four. Spokane went on to win the NWAC title by a score of 2-0 over Highline on Sunday, November 15th.
