Men’s and Women’s Basketball has officially kicked off the Winter Sports season. The Women hosted Highline on Wednesday, November 25th and the Men competed in the Pierce Thanksgiving Tournament in Lakewood. Catch up on all the action below!
Women’s Basketball hosted the Tunderbirds of Highline Community College in their first home game of the season. The Phins battled the perennially strong Thunderbirds from the opening jump in a game that went back and forth. Highline had a four point lead at the half 32-28 and used a strong 3rd quarter to extend their lead and hold off the Phins. Highline came away with a tough 62-52 win. The Phins had a number of bright spots. Shoreline forced 28 turnovers which led to 22 points off turnovers. They also added 22 second chance points off of 24 offensive rebounds. The Phins were led by Darrien Dolquist-Larson’s 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 steals. Keitra Jones added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Paris Sanders and Emjunay Jones-Lee each grabbed 8 boards.
The Phins travel to Green River on Wednesday, December 2nd for a 6pm tip off. Their next home game is the second of a Saturday doubleheader with the Men’s team on December 5th. The Men tip off at 4pm against Highline with the Women following at 6pm against Tacoma.
Men’s Basketball participated in the annual 8 team Pierce Thanksgiving Day Tournament. The Phins opened with Green River on Friday, November 27th. In a battle between two of the best scoring defenses in the league points were hard to come by. The Phins held Green River to just 38% shooting and had an 11 point lead early in the second half. Green River came back to take a one point lead in the second half after costly turnovers from the Phins. Shoreline would take a 2 point lead at 62-60 but could not score down the stretch and dropped the game 62-65. The Phins were led by Will Luckett’s double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Derrik Dean led the team in scoring with 14 points. Jason Smarr turned in an excellent all around game getting 13 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Kwame Kang scored 4 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.
On Saturday, November 28th the Phins took on South Region power Clackamas. The Phins wasted no time in this game to take control cruising to a 42-31 half time lead and eventually winning by a final score of 88-73. The Phins defense forced 27 turnovers and on offense the Phins got 19 assists on 29 made field goals. Shoreline was bolstered by Ben Steinbrueck’s return to the lineup as he scored 11 points and dished out 6 assists. Smarr led 5 Phins in double figure scoring with 23 points to go with his 7 rebounds. Luckett again added 13 points to go with his 6 rebounds. Dean scored 12 points, grabbed 4 boards and handed out 7 assists. Skyler Kelley scored 11 points and had 4 steals.
On Sunday, November 29th the Phins played host school Pierce in the 4th place game. Pierce took early control of the game as the Phins committed 13 first half turnovers – more turnovers than they had committed in either of their first two games. Down 24-34 with two minutes to go in the first half the Phins got 5 points from Kelley to close the gap to just 5 at the break. Kelley then opened the second half with a 3 and a Kang jump shot tied the score at 34. The Phins never looked back and rode a 57-27 second half to an 86-61 victory. Smarr again led the Phins with 27 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 steals as he played all 40 minutes. Kelley added 19 points and 4 rebounds. Luckett scored another 13 points and was a force on the boards with 8. dean scored 11 points and added 6 assists. Steinbrueck played a great floor game with 7 assists, 5 steals and only 2 turnovers.
The Phins took 4th place in the Pierce Thanksgiving Day Tournament and Jason Smarr was named to the All-Tournament team. A number of the Phins are among the NWAC stat leaders in the early season. Smarr is currently 7th in scoring and 3rd in steals. Luckett is 11th overall in rebounding and Dean is 9th in assists and 13th in steals. Steinbrueck leads the NWAC in assists and is 5th in steals. The Phins host Highline on Saturday, December 5th at 4pm in the first game of a basketball doubleheader with the Women’s team. The Women play Tacoma at 6pm.
