The Surf Report – December 30th

Men’s and Women’s Basketball participated in their annual NWAC Crossover just prior to Winter break. The Men traveled over Snoqualmie Pass to Yakima Valley Community College for their tournament December 17th-19th. The Women traveled to North Region member Peninsula College in Port Angeles over the same dates for their tournament. The annual NWAC Crossover pits two teams from each region in an 8 team tournament.

Shoreline basketball hosts HighlineMen’s Basketball opened their tournament with a game against West Region member Tacoma Community College on Thursday, December 17th. The Phins could not overcome a deficit of 14 rebounds and gave away 3o free throws to the Titans. Tacoma pulled away to a 90-77 victory. The Phins were led by Gadisa Margasa’s double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jason Smarr added 14 points and 8 rebounds. Skyler Kelley scored 13 points and Freshmen Joe Ghebrehiwot and Derrik Dean each dropped in 11.

Shoreline took on Linn-Benton of the South Region in a loser out game on Friday, December 18th. In this game Shoreline out rebounded the Roadrunners and got to the free throw line 39 times. Unfortunately the Phins only converted 59% of their attempts at the line. Shoreline’s poor shooting carried over to the field where they were held to 30% shooting for the game. Linn-Benton extended their 6 point half time lead to a 14 point 91-77 victory over the Phins. Shoreline was led in scoring by Dean with 15 points. Smarr added 13 points to go with 6 rebounds. Sage Drollinger came off the bench to score 13 points. Will Luckett led the team with 11 rebounds to go with his 9 points.

Shoreline is 4-5 on the year and has two tune up games prior to beginning North Region play. The Phins travel to Green River on Wednesday, December 30th for a rematch of their first game of the year at 6pm. Then Shoreline will host Yakima Valley College on Saturday, January 2nd at 4pm before opening up North Region play with a home game at 4pm on Saturday, January 9th.

Women’s Basketball traveled to Port Angeles to take part in the Peninsula College Crossover. Shoreline women's basketball hosts TacomaOn Thursday, December 17th the Phins took on South Region foe Centralia College. The Phins out-rebounded Centralia 50-36 and forced 16 turnovers but only shot 34% from the field and dropped the game 55-73. The Phins were led in scoring by Darrien Dolquist-Larson’s 20 points and 5 steals. Janaya Williams scored 7 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Paris Sanders led the Phins with 8 rebounds.

In their second game the Phins took on East Region powerhouse Spokane on Friday, December 18th. Spokane was efficient scoring 22 points in all 4 quarters on their way to an 88-50 victory. The Phins were once again held to a low shooting percentage at 32. Dolquist-Larson led the Phins once again with 25 points and 5 rebounds. Sanders grabbed a team high 7 rebounds.

The women are now 2-7 on the season. They open up North Region play against Bellevue College on Saturday, January 9th at 2pm.
