Men’s Basketball played two tune up games in preparation for North Region play over the Winter break. On Wednesday, December 30th the Phins traveled to Green River to take on the Gators. The two teams met previously in the season with Green River coming back from 11 points down in the 2nd half to knock off the Phins 65-62. This time around the Phins would have to battle back after a poor shooting first half. The Green River defense held Shoreline to just 17% shooting in the first half including just 8% from the 3 point line. Green River held a 27-16 lead at the half that they would extend to 13 points twice early in the second half. The Phins finally found their shooting stroke and battled back to take a 3 point lead with 5 minutes remaining in the game. However, Green River rebounded down the stretch as they did all game long leading to 22 offensive rebounds and 19 second chance points. In the final minutes Green River got two O boards to seal their 58-56 victory over the Phins.
Shoreline was led by Joe Ghebrehiwot’s 15 points and 10 rebounds. Gadisa Margarsa was the only other Phin in double figures with 12 points to go with his 6 rebounds. The loss dropped the Phins to 4-6 on the season.
Shoreline hosted Yakima Valley on Saturday, January 2nd looking to start the New Year on a better note than 2015 ended. In this game the Phins came out hot shooting 52% in the first half on their way to a 35-31 halftime lead. Although the Phins did not shoot as well in the 2nd half they were able to cling to their lead and come away with a 67-60 victory. Shoreline was led by Jason Smarr’s 17 points and 10 rebounds. Skyler Kelley chipped in 17 points and Ghebrehiwot added 13.
The win moves Shoreline to 5-6 heading into North Region play. The Phins host Bellevue College on Saturday, January 2nd at 4pm in the second game of a basketball doubleheader. The Women also open North Region play with Bellevue and tip off at 2pm.
