The Surf Report – January 14th

Shoreline women's basketball hosts TacomaMen’s and Women’s Basketball continued North Region play with a trip to Mt. Vernon to take on the Cardinals of Skagit Valley College. Catch up on all of the action in the Surf Report.

Women’s Basketball took on the Cardinals on Wednesday, January 13th. Skagit came into the game with an 11-6 record overall and a victory over Olympic in their first North Region contest. Shoreline came into the contest with a 2-8 record and a loss in their first North Region match up with Bellevue College. The Phins stuck close through the first quarter trailing Skagit after one quarter 13-17. The Cardinals made a late run in the second quarter to extend their lead to 14 points at the half. Skagit used their free throw advantage (31 attempts to just 15 for Shoreline) to finish off the Phins in the second half by a final score 46-74.

The Phins were led by Darrien Dolquist-Larson’s 17 points. Paris Sanders again led the team in rebounding with 10. Dani Hayes scored 12 points. With the loss the Phins drop to 0-2 in the North Region. Their next home game is Saturday, January 16th at 2pm against Olympic College.

Men’s Basketball came into their matchup against the Cardinals with a 6-6 overall record and a 1-0 Shoreline basketball hosts Highlinerecord in North Region play after defeating Bellevue College on Saturday, January 9th. The Cardinals came into the game 7-7 with an 0-1 record in the North Region. The Phins jumped out to an early lead in the first half with as much as a 17 point advantage. Shoreline extended their half time lead with a quick 7-0 run to go up 51-33. However, the Phins could not take care of the ball in the second half leading to 29 points off turn overs for the Cardinals. Shoreline slowly lost their lead and eventually fell to Skagit 80-88.

In the loss the Phins were led by 22 points and 5 rebounds from Jason Smarr. Joe Ghebrehiwot led the team with 8 rebounds and scored 15 points. Skyler Kelley added 18 points and 5 assists. Gadisa Margarsa scored 6 points, had 7 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. The loss drops the Phins to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the North Region. The Phins next home game is Saturday, January 16th at 4pm against first place Olympic College.
