The Surf Report – January 19th

Men’s and Women’s Basketball hosted North Region rival Olympic College on Saturday, January 16th. Read all about the exciting basketball double-header in this week’s Surf Report.

Shoreline CC Women's basketball team hosts Olympic CollegeWomen’s Basketball started North Region play with losses to Bellevue and Skagit Valley. Olympic entered their match-up with the Phins 0-2 in the North Region with losses to the same teams as Shoreline. Shoreline jumped out early and took a 3 point lead after the first quarter, only to see Olympic make a run in the second to take their own 3 point lead into the half. The back and forth battle continued through the third quarter with Shoreline making a run to tie up the score after three quarters. It was in the 4th quarter that the Phins finally established control of the game. Clutch free throws down the stretch from Janaya Williams and Dani Hayes sealed a 10 point 56-46 victory for the Phins.

The Phins went 16-22 from the free throw line and forced 29 turnovers in their victory. The Phins were led by Darrien Dolquist-Larson’s 13 points Shoreline CC Women's basketball team hosts Olympic Collegeand 7 rebounds. Janaya Williams led the team in scoring with 14 points. She also led the team with 5 steals. Paris Sanders led the Phins with 7 rebounds to go with her 7 points.

With the win the Phins improve to 3-9 on the year and 1-2 in the North Region. Next up the Phins host Whatcom on Wednesday, January 20th at 5:30pm. Whatcom and Shoreline are currently tied at 1-2 in 5th place in the North Region standings.

Men’s Basketball entered their match up with Olympic with a 1-1 record through the first week of North Region play. Olympic went undefeated in Shoreline CC Women's basketball team hosts Olympic Collegethe first week, one of only two teams in the North Region to escape the first week unscathed. Shoreline and Olympic met once in the preseason with the Phins dominating in a 110-77 victory. This time around nothing would be easy for either team as both Shoreline and Olympic controlled portions of the game. The Phins opened up a 16 point first half lead that they extended to as much as 23 in the second half. Olympic took the last ten minutes of the contest over coming within 2 points of the Phins with just less than 30 seconds remaining in the game. Skyler Kelley and Gadisa Margarsa went 4-4 from the free throw to seal a 78-74 win for the Phins.

In the victory the Phins overcame just 55% shooting from the free throw line and less than 40% shooting from the field. The difference in the game came from the 3 point line where the Phins went 12-25 and held Olympic to just 5-22 from 3. ShorlineShoreline CC Women's basketball team hosts Olympic College was led by Jason Smarr with 27 points and 7 rebounds. Kwame Kang chipped in 13 points and combined with Margarsa to limit Olympic’s leading scorer. Margarsa scored 10 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 5 assists. Joe Ghebrehiwot scored 8 points to go with his 7 rebounds. Devan Jackson made a big impact off the bench with 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Shoreline moves to 7-7 on the year and 2-1 in North Region play. Shoreline currently sits in a 6-way tie for 1st place in the Nort Region standings. Next up for the Phins is a home game with the #2 ranked team in the NWAC Alaska Airlines Coaches Poll the Orcas of Whatcom. Tip off is 7:30pm on Wednesday, January 20th.
