Men’s and Women’s Basketball continue their run through the tough North Region. Both teams hosted Whatcom on Wednesday, January 21st. Catch up on all the action below:
Women’s Basketball got their first win of North Region play on Saturday, January 16th against Olympic College. Both the Phins and Whatcom came into the game with match 1-2 records in North Region play. Shoreline jumped out to a 21-15 1st quarter lead behind the strong play of Enjunay Jones-Lee. The Phins extended their lead to 13 at the half with a 35-22 lead at the break. Shoreline held their lead in the 2nd half and closed out Whatcom with a 69-57 victory.
The Phins were led by Darrien Dolquist-Larson’s 21 points, 8 steals, 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Jones-Lee scored 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Paris Sanders led the Phins in rebounding for the 10th straight game with 9 rebounds to go with her 6 points.
The win moves Shoreline to 4-9 on the season and 2-2 in the North Region. Shoreline is currently tied for 4th place in the North Region. The Phins travel to Edmonds on Saturday, January 23rd for a 2pm tip off. The next home game for the Women’s Basketball team is Wednesday, January 27th against Everett at 5:30pm.
Men’s Basketball hosted Whatcom, the number #2 ranked team in the latest NWAC Alaska Airlines Coaches Poll. Shoreline came into the game in a 6-way tie for first Place in the North Region with a 2-1 league record. The teams battled back and forth through the first half with the Phins taking a 38-37 lead into the break. The first ten minutes of the second half mirrored the first half as both teams made runs at each other. Tied at 54 with 11 minutes to go, the visiting Orcas from Whatcom took control of the game. Whatcom eventually came away with a 79-62 victory.
The Phins were led in defeat by Gadisa Margarsa’s 18 points and 6 assists. Torrence Baker scored 16 points and 3 rebounds. Jason Smarr led the team with 5 rebounds to go with his 6 points. Shoreline was out-rebounded by Whatcom 39-26 and gave up 55% shooting to the Orcas.
The loss drops Shoreline to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the North Region. The Phins are currently tied for 4th place with three other teams in the North Region standings. The Phins travel to Edmonds on Saturday, January 23rd for a 4pm tip off. Their next home game is next Wednesday, January 27th at 7:30pm against Everett.
