The Surf Report – February 9th

On Saturday, February 6th the Shoreline CC Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams traveled to Bellevue College to begin the second half of North Region play with games against the Bulldogs. Catch up on all the exciting action below in this edition of the Surf Report.

Shoreline women's basketball hosts TacomaWomen’s Basketball finished the first half of North Region play two games out of the last Region playoff spot. Bellevue College entered the match up with the Phins in a 3 way tie for 1st place in the region. The Bulldogs were also ranked #3 in the latest NWAC Alaska Airlines Coaches Poll. The Phins didn’t let the rankings intimidate them and jumped out to an early first half lead. Shoreline controlled much of the first half and went into intermission with an 8 point lead. Bellevue fought back in the 3rd quarter to tie the game up heading into the 4th. Down the stretch Bellevue got a few breaks and eventually pulled away with a 67-62 victory over the Phins.

Shoreline was led by Darrien Dolquist-Larson’s 21 points and 4 steals. Enjunay Jones-Lee recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds to go with 4 steals of her own. Dani Hayes scroed 12 points and dished 6 assists. Paris Sanders grabbed 8 rebounds to go with 6 points and 2 blocks. The loss drops the Phins to 2-6 in the North Region and 4-13 overall. They remain just 2 games out of the final playoff spot with 6 North Region games to go. The Phins host Skagit Valley on Wednesday, February 10th at 5:30pm.

Men’s Basketball came into the second half of North Region play in a similar spot to the Women’s Shoreline basketball hosts Highlineteam. A 2-5 North Region record through the first half of Region play left the Phins two games out of the playoff picture. In the first game between these two teams the Phins pulled out a tough 75-68 victory. This time around Bellevue took early control leading by as much as ten points in the first half. Shoreline made a run late in the 1st half to bring their deficit to just 1 point at the half. Bellevue again jumped out to a lead in the second stanza, using 23 offensive rebounds and 18 forced turn overs to create a number of extra opportunities. The Phins battled back and had multiple attempts at shots to tie the game down the stretch that just fell short. The Phins dropped the game 65-67.

Shoreline was led by Jason Smarr’s 21 points and 8 rebounds. Skyler Kelley added 19 points with 5 3 pointers. Joe Ghebrehiwot scored 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Torrence Baker battled foul trouble to score 8 points in just 15 minutes. Ben Steinbrueck led the team with 6 assists. The loss drops Shoreline to 2-6 in the North Region and 7-12 overall. Shoreline is still 2 games out of the final playoff spot with 6 games to go. The Phins host Skagit Valley on Wednesday, February 10th at 7:30pm in what is a must win for Shoreline’s playoff hopes.
