The Surf Report – February 11th

Men’s and Women’s Basketball hosted Skagit Valley College on Wednesday, February 11th in a bball doubleheader. Both teams are fighting for an NWAC playoff berth out of the difficult North Region. Only 3 weeks remain in the regular season so every game counts!

Shoreline CC Women's basketball team hosts Olympic CollegeMen’s Basketball came into their game against Skagit on a 5 game losing streak with a 2-6 North Region record. The Phins desperately needed a win to keep pace with the rest of the North Region and cling to their NWAC playoff hopes. In the first match up between the two teams Skagit came back from an 18 point deficit to take an 88-80 victory over the Phins. On Wednesday night the Phins again jumped out to an early double digit lead on Skagit taking a 47-32 lead into the half. This time around Shoreline was able to extend their lead behind the shooting of Jason Smarr, Devan Jackson and Gadisa Margarsa. The Phins pulled away from Skagit in the second half cruising to a 96-69 victory.

Smarr led Shoreline with 26 points and 16 rebounds. Jackson provided a spark off the bench with 20 points and 5 rebounds. Margarsa poured in 22 points and dished 4 assists. Joe Ghebrehiwot recorded a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Torrence Baker also produced 12 points to go with 7 rebounds. In an all around team performance the Phins out rebounded Skagit 52-32 and had 20 assists on 32 field goals.

Shoreline travels to Bremerton on Saturday, February 13th to take on Olympic College in another must win for the Phins. Shoreline is now 8-12 on the year and 3-6 in the North Region. They sit one game out of the 4th and final North Region playoff spot. The next home game for the Phins is Saturday, February 20th at 4pm against Edmonds.

Women’s Basketball took on Skagit in a similar position to the Men’s team. With 6 games to go in Shoreline women's basketball hosts Tacomaleague the Phins trailed Everett for the 4th playoff spot by 2 games. In their first match up Skagit used two big quarters to pull away from Shoreline for a 74-46 victory. In the Wednesday night match up, the first place Cardinals of Skagit Valley jumped out to an early lead and never let the Phins back into the game. Skagit’s defense held the Phins to single digit scoring in each of the first 3 quarters. The Cardinals held on in the 4th and finished with a 82-43 victory over the Phins.

In the loss the Phins were led in scoring by Enjunay Jones-Lee with 13. Dani Hayes scored 8 points, dished 3 assists, and grabbed 3 rebounds. Paris Sanders led the team with 5 rebounds. Shoreline is now 4-14 overall and 2-7 in the North Region. They trail Everett by 3 games with 5 remaining. Shoreline travels to Olympic College on Saturday, February 13th for a 2pm game. Their next home game is on Saturday, February 20th against Edmonds at 2pm.
