The Surf Report – February 23rd

The Winter sports season is winding down and with that means playoff races in Men’s and Women’s Basketball. Our Shoreline Basketball teams hosted Edmonds for a vitally important basketball double header on Saturday, February 20th. Get up to date with all of the NWAC North Region playoff scenarios in this week’s Surf Report:

Shoreline CC Volleyball team is honored at halftimeMen’s Basketball came into their game against Edmonds having lost 4 out of their last 5 games. The 4 losses all came on the road by a combined score of just 12 points. The Phins’ lone victory in the 5 game stretch was a 26 point home win over Skagit Valley. In a must win game the Phins were hoping for some more magic in The Tank against Edmonds. The first half was a tight back and forth affair with Shoreline jumping out to a 5 point lead only to see Edmonds come back and take a 7 point lead of their own. At the half Edmonds held on to a tight 46-44 lead. The second half is when the game heated up. Edmonds extended an early lead all the way out to 65-51 with 15 minutes remaining. Following a time out Shoreline hit 3 straight 3 pointers to cut the 14 point lead to 5.  Eventually the Phins came all the way back and tied the game at 70. With all the momentum the Phins pushed out to their own 14 point lead at 88-74. Edmonds refused to go away going on a 12-2 run to cut the Phins lead to just 4 points with 2 minutes to go. Devan Jackson hit 2 deep 3 pointers on the next two ensuing Phins possessions to seal a 102-92 victory and keep their playoff hopes alive.Shoreline CC Volleyball team is honored at halftime

The Phins were led by Jackson’s 33 points on 9-13 shooting from the 3 point line. Gadisa Margarsa paced the team throughout with 22 points and 6 big free throws down the stretch to ice the win. Jason Smarr scored 14 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished out 7 assists. Ben Steinbrueck scored 11 points to go with his team leading 8 assists. Joe Ghebrehiwot and Torrence Baker manned the middle and combined for 17 points and 6 rebounds.

The win moves Shoreline to 4-8 in the North Region still 2 games back of the final playoff spot with 2 games to go. The Phins travel to Everett on Wednesday, February 24th for a 7pm game. Their last home game is Saturday, February 27th at 4pm against North Region champion Peninsula College. The Phins have to win their last two North Region games to have a chance at the last NWAC playoff spot.

Tacoma Stars defeat San Diego Sockers 7-6Women’s Basketball began the day Saturday trailing Everett by 2 games for the final playoff spot in the North Region. Facing a must win situation the Phins used stifling defense to take early control ovf their game with Edmonds. Shoreline held Edmonds to just 20 first half points on their way to a 30-20 lead at the break. The 3rd quarter is when the Phins took complete control of the game holding Edmonds to just 11 points and exploding on the offensive end for 26. Shoreline never looked back and pulled out a 74-48 victory.

The Phins were led by 14 points and 8 rebounds from Betty Alem. Paris Sanders led the team with 9 rebounds to go with her 8 points. Enjunay Jones-Lee scored 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Darrien Dolquist-Larson 10 points and also had 5 rebounds to go with 4 assists. Dani Hayes led the team with 5 assists and scored 7 Tacoma Stars defeat San Diego Sockers 7-6points.

The win keeps the Phins very much in the playoff picture of the North Region. Everett won on Saturday and remain two games ahead of the Phins. These two teams match up in a huge game on Wednesday, February 24th at Everett at 5pm. The Phins need to win their last two games and hope that Everett drops their final game on the last day of Region play to force a tie for 4th place.
