The Surf Report – February 25th

Men’s and Women’s Basketball traveled to Everett on Wednesday, February 24th for their last road game of the North Region schedule. Both teams needed wins to keep their playoff hopes alive. See how your Phins did in Everett in the latest Surf Report.

Tacoma Stars defeat San Diego Sockers 7-6Women’s Basketball came into their match up with Everett trailing the Trojans by 2 games for the final North Region Playoff spot. The Phins needed a win to stay alive heading into the final day of North Region play. The game was tight statistically as each team grabbed 46 rebounds and only had 12 turn overs. Everett got to the free throw line 7 more times than the Phins, but only shot 57%. Meanwhile the Phins converted on 75% of their free throw attempts. Everett maintained a 32-23 lead at the half that they extended to ten points with a 13-12 3rd quarter. Shoreline refused to go away and came back in the 4th quarter cutting the Everett lead to just 2 points down the stretch. The Phins had to foul and Everett converted 4 straight free throws to win the game 60-54.

Shoreline was led by Enjunay Jones Lee’s 20 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Darrien Dolquist-Larson scored 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Paris Sanders led the team with 11 rebounds to go with her 3 points. Betty Alem grabbed 9 boards. Dani Hayes led the team with 4 assists.

The loss drops Shoreline to 4-9 in league and 6-16 overall. The Phins host 1st place and NWAC defending champion Peninsula College on Saturday, February 27th at 2pm. This is the last home game of the year and we will be celebrating Sophomores Fatuma Abu and Darrien Dolquist-Larson.

Men’s Basketball faced a similar situation to the women, needing a win to keep their slim playoffShoreline CC Volleyball team is honored at halftime hopes alive. The Phins came into the game trailing Edmonds by two games for the last North Region playoff spot. Shoreline needed to win Wednesday night and hope that Edmonds dropped their game against Olympic. Shoreline started the game up 20-10, but an Everett time out changed the momentum. Everett went on a 20-2 run to take a 30-22 lead. Shoreline matched Everett’s run with one of their own to close the half trailing 32-33. In the second half the Phins controlled the pace and the game behind 55% shooting from the field. Shoreline’s defense also held Everett to just 35% shooting in the second half. The Phins assisted on 15 of their 25 field goals on their way to a 73-67 victory.

Shoreline was led by Devan Jackson’s 20 points and 7 rebounds in just 27 minutes. Jason Smarr scored 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Gadisa Margarsa scored 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Torrence Baker scored 9 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Ben Steinbrueck led the team with 6 assists to go with his 9 Shoreline CC Volleyball team is honored at halftimepoints.

The win moves the Phins to 5-8 in the North Region and 10-14 overall. The excitement of the win was dashed as word made it to the Phins’ locker room that Edmonds had beat Olympic eliminating the Phins from the North Region playoff picture. The Phins still have one game remaining against Peninsula College on Saturday, February 27th at 4pm. Shoreline will honor Sophomores Skyler Kelley, Kwame Kang and Jason Smarr.
