Men’s and Women’s Basketball hosted Peninsula College on Saturday, February 27th for the last basketball doubleheader of the Winter sports season. The Surf Report has all the exciting basketball action from this past weekend.
Men’s Basketball came into their game against Peninsula on a 2 game winning streak, but unfortunately had been eliminated from contention for the NWAC tournament when Edmonds beat Olympic on Wednesday, February 24th. Peninsula had already wrapped up the North Region Championship and the #1 seed going into the NWAC tournament thanks to a 9 game winning streak of their own. The Phins honored their Sophomores Skyler Kelley, Kwame Kang and Jason Smarr as the trio of guards played their last game for Shoreline.
The Phins held Peninsula to just 40% shooting and out rebounded the Pirates 48-34. Shoreline also won the battle at the free throw line going 12-16 compared to just 5-10 for Peninsula. Despite winning these statistical categories the Phins still trailed Peninsula 36-38 at the half. Peninsula controlled the early part of the 2nd half pushing out to their largest lead of the game by 9 points at 50-41. Shoreline made a run back at Peninsula behind buckets from Smarr, Gadisa Margarsa and Joe Ghebrehiwot to take the lead back at 56-55. The lead would change 2 more time sbefore Shoreline took control behind another Smarr three. Shoreline went on to win 74-63 snapping Peninsula’s 9 game winning streak.
The Phins were led by 18 points and 9 rebounds from Jason Smarr in his last contest as a Phin. Torrence Baker scored 13 points to go with 4 rebounds. Devan Jackson scored 10 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, dished out 4 assists, had 5 steals and blocked 3 shots in an all around performance. All 8 Phins that played in this game scored.
The win moved the Phins to 6-8 in the North region and 11-14 overall. Shoreline finished just 1 game out of a tie for 4th place and a shot at the last North Region playoff spot. The Phins went 4-3 in the second half of North Region play with their 3 losses coming at a combined score of 7 points.
Women’s Basketball took on the defending NWAC Champion Peninsula Pirates. Peninsula had already secured a share of the North Region title prior to Saturday’s game. The Phins were eliminated from the North Region playoffs on Wednesday with a loss to Everett. The Phins honored Sophomores Fatuma Abu and Darrien Dolquist-Larson as the two guards played their last game in a Phins’ uniform.
Peninsula jumped out to an early 24-12 first quarter lead and never looked back. The Pirates out rebounded the Phins 48-33 and got to the free throw line 26 times where they made 81% of their shots. Peninsula pulled away for an 81-46 victory. The Phins were led by Dolquist-Larson’s 12 points and 5 assists. Fellow Sophomore Fatuma Abu was the only other Phin in double figures with 10 points. Paris Sanders led the team with 8 rebounds.
The Phins made a major improvement in Head Coach Darnellia Russell’s second full season. The Phins improved from 0 wins in the 2014-15 season to an overall record of 6-17 including a 4-10 North Region record. The Phins were in playoff contention all the way until the last week of Region play and return a majority of their roster for the 2016-17 season.
