The Surf Report – March 4th

The Shoreline Community College Baseball team opened their season on Tuesday, March 1st with a trip to Yakima Valley to take on the Yaks in a doubleheader. Spring season is officially underway and the Phins are looking to get back to the NWAC playoffs after their record setting season in 2015.

8 BeckerIn the first game of the doubleheader the Phins started Sam Boone. Boone pitched a solid 5 innings with 6 strike outs and only allowed 1 earned run and 3 hits. Yakima took an early lead with 2 runs in the 3rd inning, but Shoreline was able to tie the game in the top of the 6th with 2 runs of their own off a David Becker double and a TJ McCullough home run. Unfortunately the Phins could not muster any other runs in the game despite 9 hits including 5 extra base hits. Yakima tacked on 6 more runs in the 7th and 8th innings to get the 8-2 victory. In the loss the Phins were led by a 3-4 showing by Becker – all 3 of his hits were doubles. McCullough had a single to go with his home run and two RBIs.

In game 2 of the doubleheader the Phins started Mitch Gouveia on the mound. Gouveia pitched 4 scoreless innings with 7 strike outs before giving up 3 runs in the 5th. Payton Mackin came on in relief to strike out 5 batters and scatter 2 runs over 3 innings. The Phins scored a run in the 3rd and had a big 3 run 6th to hold a 4-3 lead heading into the 7th inning. Yakima scored 1 run in the 7th to tie the game up at 4 then added another in the bottom of the 9th to take the second game of the doubleheader 5-4. In the loss the 15 GouveiaPhins were led by 2nd baseman Pete Pennylegion’s 2 doubles and 1 RBI.

The Phins are now 0-2 to start the season. They have a weekend series with Tacoma on Saturday, March 5th and Sunday, March 6th. On Saturday the Phins travel to Tacoma for a doubleheader. Sunday will be the first home games of the season for the Phins at Meridian Park in Shoreline. First pitch is 1:00pm on Sunday followed by game 2.
