The Surf Report – March 8th

Over a wet Pacific Northwest weekend Softball and Baseball squeezed a few games in – catch up on all the Spring sports action in this week’s Surf Report.

16 Shelby ReyesSoftball opened their season with an inter-Region event in Lacey, Washington on Sunday, March 6th with games against Olympic and Centralia. The Phins’ first game of the day was an 11-9 come back victory over Olympic. Through 2 innings the Phins trailed 6-1, but turned the game around with a big 6 run 3rd inning to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Phins tacked on 4 more runs to come away with an 11-9 victory. Shelby Reyes led the Phins  going 3 for 4 from the plate with 5 RBIs, a double, and a home run. Kathryn Goff struck out 5 batters in her complete game victory and added power from the plate with a home run and 3 RBIs.

In game 2 the Phins took on Centralia from the West Region. The Phins could never quite get any offense going striking out 12 times as a team and only getting 5 hits in the game. Sarah Casel went 2-3 and got her 2nd stolen base of the year, but this was the lone highlight for the Phins. Shoreline dropped the game 0-9. The Phins are now 1-1 on the year and travel to Olympic on Saturday, March 13th for a doubleheader.

Baseball had a 4 game weekend series with perennial NWAC power Tacoma. On Saturday, March 5th Shoreline CC Baseball hosts Tacoma CCthe Phins traveled to Tacoma for a doubleheader. In game 1 the Phins started Connor Anderson on the mound. Anderson gave up 5 runs through the first two innings then settled down to hold the Tacoma bats mostly quiet over the next 3 and a 1/3 innings. The Phins went down 6 runs after 4 innings and then fought back with 2 runs in the 5th. A 3 run 7th inning come back attmpt was not enough and the Phins dropped the game 5-7. The Phins were led by shortstop Drey McInnes’s triple and 3 RBIs. In game 2 the Phins couldn’t match two big innings from Tacoma that combined to score 12 runs. Shoreline dropped the game 5-15. The bright spot was TJ McCullough’s 2 home run of the year and Pete Pennylegion’s 4th double through 4 games.

Shoreline hosted the Sunday doubleheader of the series on March 6th. In game 1 the Phins started lefty Payton Mackin. Mackin threw 3 shutout Shoreline CC Baseball hosts Tacoma CCinnings before giving up a run in the 4th. The Phins came right back to tie the game at 1-1 with another home run blast from McCullough, but Tacoma tacked on 3 more runs in the 5th inning to take a 4-1 lead over the Phins. Tacoma extended their lead with 8 runs in the 6th and another run the 7th to win 13-1. In game 2 Shoreline took a 1 run lead in the first. Tacoma scored twice in the 3rd only to see the Phins come right back to tie the game at 2 after 3 innings. Unfortunately the Phins would not score again until the 9th inning and lost the game 4-11. The Phins are now 0-6 on the early season and have a weekend series with Centralia on Saturday, March 12 and Sunday March 13th. The Phins will host at Meridian Park on Sunday, March 13th at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
