The Surf Report – April 11th

As the weather turns in Seattle our Spring sports season is heating up as well. Softball and Baseball have just begun their North Region schedule and every game counts towards possible playoff berths. Each team played four games this weekend – the Surf Report has all the action from the diamond!

Edmonds CC Softball hosts Shoreline CCSoftball entered the weekend on a high note coming off a come from behind victory over defending North Region champion Douglas College. On Saturday, April 9th the Phins traveled to Edmonds to take on the Tritons in a doubleheader. In game 1 the Phins wasted no time taking control as they scored 4 runs in the first inning and never looked back on their way to a 11-4 victory. Emily Jackson went 2 for 4 with a double and a triple on her way to 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs. Alyssa Giesbers added 3 RBIs. Sarah Casel went 3 for 5, scored 3 runs and stole 2 bases. Dakota Green pitched a complete game and didn’t give up a run after the 2nd inning to record the win. In game 2 the Phins again opened up a 1st inning lead when Shelby Reyes hit a triple to bring in Jackson. Reyes scored to give the Phins a 2-0 lead. Kathryn Goff got the start and held the Tritons quiet only allowing 1 run as the Phins swept the doubleheader with a 2-1 game 2 victory.

On Sunday, April 10th the Phins hosted the Everett Trojans at Meridian for a doubleheader. Game 1 was Edmonds CC Softball hosts Shoreline CCa classic pitchers duel as both teams were held scoreless through the first 6 innings. An Everett solo home run in the top of the 7th gave the Trojans all the offense they needed to hold off the Phins for a 1-0 victory. Green again pitched a complete game only giving up the 1 run in the 7th. In game 2 the Phins were down 6-0 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning when Shoreline finally scored it’s first runs of the day off of the Trojans. Shoreline closed the gap with 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th, then took a 7-6 lead with 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th. Goff held off a Trojan come back attempt and the Phins got a split of the doubleheader. Drew Camacho got the big hit in the Phins’ come back with a bases clearing triple. Goff helped her cause with 2 RBIs and Alyssa Giesbers matched her with 2 RBIs of her own.

The 3-1 weekend moves Shoreline to 4-2 in the North Region and in a 2nd place tie with Everett. The Phins are now 8-6 on the year and take a break from their North Region schedule to participate in the Yakima Valley Crossover April 16th and 17th. The Phins play four games over 2 days starting Saturday with a 9am matchup with Mt. Hood and a 2:00pm game with Blue Mountain. On Sunday the Phins take on Highline at 3:30pm and Walla Walla at 5:30pm. The Phins return to North Region play on April 23rd with a trip to Skagit Valley. Their next home game is Sunday, April 24th against Bellevue College.

Shoreline CC Baseball hosts Tacoma CCBaseball had a weekend series with the #2 ranked team in the latest NWAC Alaska Airlines Coaches Poll the Everett Trojans. On Saturday, April 9th the Phins traveled to Everett for the first of back to back doubleheaders. In game 1 the Phins struggled to get anything going offensively as they managed only 4 hits on the day. Everett scored a run in the 1st and another in the 3rd. They would go onto score 5 runs over the last 4 innings to beat the Phins 7-1. Sam Boone gave up 6 hits and struck out 5 in the loss. In game 2 Payton Mackin got the start and went 6 innings giving up 1 run and striking out 5. Max Dwyer pitched 2 innings giving up 1 run, but the Phins had a worse afternoon at the plate with only 3 hits. Despite another strong pitching performance the Phins lost game 2 by a score of 0-2.

On Sunday, April 10th the series returned to Meridian for a doubleheader. The friendly confines of their home park woke the Phins’ bats as Shoreline scored a run in the 1st and 2nd inning. Everett scored 2 of their own in the top of the 2nd and the game remained tied until Shoreline exploded for 6 runs over 2Shoreline CC Baseball hosts Tacoma CC innings to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Pitcher Myles Gouveia went 7 innings only allowing 3 runs and Dwyer came in to get a 2 inning save allowing 1 run. The Phins took game 1 with an 8-4 final score. TJ McCullough had 2 RBIs and David Becker got his team leading 15th RBI as he went 3 for 5 in the game. In game 2 the Phins started Connor Anderson and got another solid performance from one of their starters. Anderson went 7 innings only giving up 7 hits and 2 runs. The Phins scored 3 runs in the 6th inning thanks to back to back doubles from Becker and Sheldon Rouzan. Chantz Justice replaced Anderson in the 8th inning and only allowed 1 base runner on his way to a save and a 3-2 Phins’ win.

With the series split the Phins moved to 2-6 in the North Region and 8-18 overall. Next week the Phins have a weekend series against Skagit Valley. On Saturday, April 16th the Phins travel to Mt. Vernon for a doubleheader. On Sunday, April 17th the Phins host Skagit Valley at Meridian with the doubleheader starting at 12:30pm.
