The Surf Report – April 18th

Baseball and Softball had another busy weekend on the diamond with 4 games each. The baseball team continued NWAC North Region play with a weekend series against Skagit Valley. Softball traveled to Yakima for the NWAC Softball Crossover and took on teams from the South, West and East Regions. All the latest Spring Sports action is in this week’s Surf Report.

Edmonds CC Softball hosts Shoreline CCSoftball took a break from their North Region schedule for the annual NWAC Crossover in Yakima. The Phins opened the event on Saturday, April 16th with a game against the #2 ranked team in the NWAC Alaska Airlines Coaches poll the Saints from Mt. Hood. The Phins struggled to get anything going offensively against Mt. Hood and allowed two different 3 run innings eventually dropping the game 0-8. Shoreline’s second game on Saturday was against Blue Mountain from the East Region. The Phins scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Unfortunately the Phins could not hold on as Blue Mountain scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th and held on to win by a 3-2 final.

On Sunday, April 17th the Phins looked to back bounce against Treasure Valley from the East Region and Highline from the West. Shoreline first took on Treasure Valley with Dakota Green getting the start. The Phins trailed 0-2 heading into the bottom of the 3rd inning when the Phins offense exploded for 6 runs. The Phins scored 3 more runs to pull away for a 9-5 victory. Kathryn Goff went 3 for 4 from the plate with 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs. Goff also pitched 2 innings to close the game out only allowing 1 run during the Treasure Valley come back attempt. Alyssa Giesbers also went 3 for 4 from the plate with 2 RBIs. In game 2 on Sunday the Phins took on Highline. The Phins again flexed their muscles on offense scoring 8 runs in the first 3 innings on their way to 9 for the game. Shoreline held off a late Highline come back attempt and pulled out a tight 9-8 victory. Goff pitched a complete game for the win and starred from the plate once again going 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Jeralyn Pasoquen went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and 4 other Phins had multi hit games.

The weekend split moves the Phins to 10-8 on the season. The Phins remain 4-2 in the North Region in a 2-way tie for second place with Everett. The Phins travel to Skagit Valley for a North Region doubleheader on Saturday, April 23rd. On Sunday, April 24th the Phins host the 1st place Bellevue Bulldogs at Meridian park with the doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.

Baseball had a weekend series with Skagit Valley over the weekend. On Saturday, April 16th the Phins Shoreline CC Baseball hosts Tacoma CCtraveled to Mt. Vernon for the first of back to back doubleheaders. In game 1 on Saturday the Phins went down 8-1 after the first inning. Shoreline battled back and took a 9-8 lead heading into the 8th inning. Skagit scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 8th and held off the Phins in the 9th to get a 12-11 win. Pete Pennylegion went 3 for 6 from the plate and scored 3 runs. Drey McInness led the team with 3 RBIs. Chantz Justice went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. In Game 2 the Phins started Payton Mackin on the mound. Mackin went 6 and 2/3rds innings scattering 6 hits on his way to a 4-3 win. Pennylegion scored 2 runs and Zach Zurbrugg went 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs. Kyler Kedroske went 4 for 4 from the plate.

On Sunday, April 17th the series returned to Meridian Park for a doubleheader. In game 1 the Phins could not get anything going on offense and committed 5 errors on their way to a 4-0 loss. In game 2 the Phins commanded the game early with a 5-2 lead through 7 innings. In the 8th Skagit began a rally with a home run and capitalized on 2 Shoreline errors on their way to 5 runs. Skagit held the Phins scoreless over the least two innings to take a 7-5 victory. Zurbrugg again led the Phins going 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs.

The 1-3 weekend drops the Phins to 9-21 overall and 3-9 in the North Region. Shoreline takes on Douglas College in their next weekend series. On Saturday, April 23rd the Phins Travel to Surrey, BC for a doubleheader. On Sunday, April 24th the Phins host Douglas at Meridian with the first pitch of the doubleheader at 12:30pm.
