NWAC Softball Championship Preview

Shoreline CC Softball hosts Skagit Valley CollegeThe Shoreline CC Softball team qualified for the 2016 NWAC Championship Tournament for the first time since 2012. Head Coach Ben Reindel took over the program in the Fall of 2014 with only a few players signed to play the 2015 Spring season. Reindel built a strong recruiting class on the fly highlighted by Sarah Casel, Emily Jackson, Chelsea Foster, Madeline Roberts and Megan Bruce all members of the 2015 team that built the foundation for 2016. In 2015 the Phins finished tied for last place in the North Region standings with a record of 8-24 overall and 5-19 in the North Region. One season later they finished at 16-16 overall and 10-10 in the difficult North Region while rising as high as #8 in the NWAC according to RPI. The Phins finished in 3rd place in the North Region and enter the NWAC Softball Championship as the #10 seed with a first round match-up with #7 North Idaho the champions of the East Region.

The 5 key Sophomores returned for the 2016 season and combined with a strong group of Freshmen. Shoreline CC Softball hosts Skagit Valley CollegeThe Phins have been getting production up and down the line up. Centerfielder and lead-off batter Casel is hitting .389 and leads the team with 14 walks, 27 stolen bases, and 31 runs scored. Shortstop Jackson is hitting .402 and leads the team with 10 doubles and 3 triples on the season. The power in the lineup has been provided by a trio of Freshmen. Pitcher Kathryn Goff has a 5-4 record on the year as well as a team leading 35 strike outs, but also leads the team with a .429 batting average and 34 RBIs. Goff is tied with Freshmen Shelby Reyes and Jackson with 13 extra base hits on the year. Reyes is hitting .402 with 31 RBIs. Freshmen Catcher Drew Camacho is second on the team with a .421 batting average to go with her 8 extra base hits and 15 RBIs. Freshmen Jeralyn Pasoquen and Alyssa Giesbers have provided steady defense and add pop to the line up. Pasoquen is hitting .310 with 20 RBIs while Giesbers is hitting .309 with 20 RBIs.

Shoreline CC Softball hosts Skagit Valley CollegeThe 2016 NWAC Championship Tournament is being held at Delta Park in Portland, Oregon May 20th – May 23rd. The Phins opening round opponent is the East Region Champion North Idaho Cardinals. This is the first season North Idaho has been a member of the NWAC. North Idaho went 33-11 on the season with a 26-6 record in the East Region. The Cardinals have a powerful offense led by 4 players with double digit home run totals on the season. The Cardinals have scored 400 runs on the season with 80 home runs. The Cardinals also boast a team ERA of 4.13. Shoreline takes on North Idaho on Friday, May 20th at 10am.

The Phins find themselves in the toughest 4 team pod in the tournament. In the other match up the #2 seeded Clackamas Cougars take on the West Region Champion #15 seeded Centralia Trailblazers. The Phins will take on one of these two teams in their second round match up Friday afternoon. The NWAC Softball Championship is a double elimination tournament. The Phins will need to win 5 games to take home the first NWAC Championship in school history.
