The Surf Report – Fall Sports Season Underway

School doesn’t start until September 21st, but our Fall Sports athletes have been working hard since August 1st! Volleyball, Women’s Soccer and Men’s Soccer all started their seasons over the weekend of August 27th and 28th with the NWAC Fall Festival. With the North Region schedule just around the corner its time for the first Surf Report of the year!

Volleyball already has 13 matches under their belt with 6 coming over the opening weekend at theshcc-vb-2016-wt-19 NWAC Fall Festival. In their opening weekend Volleyball went 1-5 with a win over Tacoma. On August 30th the Phins split two matches with a win over Mt. Hood and a loss in 5 sets to Gray’s Harbor. Next up the Phins competed in the Highline Community College tournament over labor Day Weekend. Shoreline went 3-2 over the weekend with victories over Skagit Valley, Umpqua and Spokane. The Phins are currently 5-8 with two more matches before North Region play. Shoreline will travel to Bellevue on Tuesday, September 13th for matches against Linn Benton and Walla Walla. The first home game of the season will be on Friday, September 23rd against North Region rival Bellevue College at 7pm.

Men’s Soccer played two matches at the NWAC Fall Festival. They opened their season with Rogue College out of Oregon on Saturday, August 27th. The Phins opened the scoring in the first half with a goal from Abel Kassa in the 33rd minute. The Phins added two goals in the second half from Tim Schneider and Terrell Norris, respectively. Rogue pulled a goal back in the 89th minute, but the Phins came away with a 3-1 victory. On Sunday, August 28th the Phins took on Tacoma. The Phins gave up two goals in the first half, but brought one back in the 49th minute when Angel Alcaraz finished an assist from Kassa. shcc-msoc-2016-wt-24Unfortunately the Phins could not finish any of their other second half chances and dropped the game 1-2. Shoreline opens their North Region schedule at home on Saturday, September 10th at 2:15pm against defending Region and NWAC Champion Peninsula College.

Women’s Soccer also opened their season at the NWAC Fall Festival. On Saturday, August 27th the Phins opened their season against Chemeketa and began their season with a 1-0 victory. Shoreline’s lone goal was scored by Sophomore Shey Thompson. Goalkeeper Naza Hernandez got her first clean sheet of the season. On Sunday, August 28th the Phins took on Tacoma Community College. The Phins started the game on fire scoring two goals in the first 26 minutes of play. Freshmen Brooklyn Gratzer and Careena Alaoui scored their first goals of their young Shoreline Soccer careers. Tacoma drew closer with a goal of their own in the 67th minute, but the Phins were able to hold their lead over the last 20 minutes to start the season with a 2-0 record. The Phins open up North Region play against Peninsula College at 12:15pm on Saturday, September 10th.
