With our defending North Region Champion Volleyball team beginning their title defense on Friday, September 23rd all three Fall Sports teams are in the thick of region play. Volleyball hosted Bellevue last Friday in a match up between the top two finishers from 2015. In a tightly contested match Bellevue took the first two games by a score of 25-21 and 25-19. The ten minute intermission gave the Phins a chance to regroup and Shoreline took the 3rd game 25-18. In the fourth game Shoreline was the first to 25, but Bellevue trailed by just one point at 24. Bellevue went onto score the next 3 points taking the 4th game and the set by a score of 27-25.
Shoreline was led in defeat by 15 kills from Taylor Alexander. Kyla Pitzman and Kristina Nielsen added 9 and 8 kills, respectively. Carlie Howard had 43 assists and 10 digs. Julia Clack had 15 digs in the match. The Phins are 6-11 on the year and 0-1 early in North Region play. They host Olympic on Wednesday, September 28th at 7pm.
Women’s Soccer hosted Whatcom on Saturday, September 24th in a matchup between the 2nd and 3rd place teams in the North Region standings. The Phins needed a win to over take Whatcom in the league table. In the first half the Phins controlled possession but could not find the back of the net. After the half time break in the the 53rd minute Whatcom was able to score a goal against the run of play. The Phins battled back and in the 75th minute tied the game at 1 thanks to a beautiful upper 90 strike from Madisson Lowdon. The last 15 minutes were dominated by the Phins with a number of chances that could not be converted as Shoreline settled for the draw.
The draw keeps Shoreline in 3rd place just 2 points behind Whatcom after the first round of Region play. The Phins are 4-2-1 on the year and 2-2-1 in the North Region. Shoreline travels to Port Angeles to take on Peninsula who currently sits in first place in the North region. Their next home game is Wednesday, October 5th at 2:00pm against Edmonds.
Men’s Soccer also hosted Whatcom on Saturday, September 24th. The match saw 4 goals – 3 of them from penalties as Whatcom took the match by a score of 3-1. The Phins scored their lone goal down a man in the 73rd minute when Callahan Gobel calmly finished his penalty.
The loss drops the Phins to 2-0-5 on the year and 1-0-4 in the North Region after one round of play. Shoreline is only 4 point behind the 3rd NWAC playoff spot and begins the second round of Region play with a trip to league leading Peninsula on Wednesday, September 28th. The Phins host Edmonds on Wednesday, October 5th at 4:15pm in their next home match.
