Men’s and Women’s Soccer hosted Everett on Saturday, October 8th – both teams are in the thick of an NWAC Playoffs push. Women’s Soccer came into their match tied with Everett for 3rd place at 12 points. On Saturday, Everett opened the scoring in the first half with a goal off a corner kick in the 25th minute. The Phins created a number of chances in the first half, but could not put any of their shots on target. Finally in the 43rd minute the Phins broke through. Lex Simmons took a free kick from 40 yards out and played a perfect ball to Brooklyn Gratzer at the edge of the box. Gratzer got her head to the ball and lopped a goal over the Everett keeper.
With the score tied 1-1 going into the 2nd half the Phins began to get more comfortable in their possession. Twenty minutes into the 2nd half Makenzie Sjoden blasted a shot on goal. The ball took a deflection and fell right to the feet of Madisson Lowdon who calmly placed the ball in the back of the net. Three minutes later Lowdon played a ball through to Shey Thompson on the right wing. Thompson took 2 touches and used power to get her shot past the Everett keeper on a tight angle. The Phins held this lead for the last 20 minutes and came away with a 3-1 victory.
The win gives the Phins some breathing room in their NWAC Playoffs push. Shoreline now sits alone in 3rd place with 15 points – 3 points ahead of Everett. Their next match is Wednesday, October 12th at Whatcom. Whatcom is currently 1 point ahead of the Phins in the North Region standings. A win for the Phins would put them in 2nd place as the 3rd and final round of region play begins. The next home game for Shoreline is on Wednesday, October 19th against Skagit Valley at 2pm as part of a Fall Sports Triple-Header.
Men’s Soccer has been on a tear as of late. After a loss to Peninsula on Wednesday, September 28th the Phins dropped to 1-0-5 in North Region play with only 3 points nearing the midway point of the region schedule. But Shoreline refocused and took 6 points from the next two matches to pull themselves into a tie for 3rd place with Edmonds. On Saturday the Phins continued their hot streak with a dominating performance over Everett. The Phins had 6 different goal scorers on their way to a 6-1 victory. Leading scorer Angel Alcaraz opened the scoring with a goal off an assist from Noe Ellenramirez in the 38th minute. In the second half the goals came fast and early. First Alcaraz played a cross to Tim Schneider who calmly finished for a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute. Five minutes later Callahan Gobel scored a penalty for a 3-0 lead. In the 68th minute Austin Burton skipped a deep shot past the Everett keeper. One minute later Burton played Ellenramirez through for a goal and a 5-0 lead. Everett pulled a goal back in the 75th minute, but Cristian O’Reily finished off the scoring for Shoreline with a tough goal in the 82nd minute to secure the 6-1 win.
The win keeps Shoreline in a tie for 3rd place with Edmonds, both teams now with 12 points. Shoreline travels to 2nd place Whatcom on Wednesday, October 12th. If the Phins can take points from this game they will have a good chance of starting the 3rd and final round of region play in sole possession of 3rd place. Their next home match is Wednesday, October 19th as the second leg of the Fall Sports Triple Header.
