The Fall Sports Season is nearing an end but the Shoreline Dolphins continue to be recognized for their work on the field and court as well as in the classroom. Women’s Soccer and Volleyball each made the NWAC Championship Tournament in their respective sports and a number of our athletes garnered spots on postseason awards lists.
Sophomore Forward Angel Alcaraz was named to the NWAC Men’s North-East Region All-Star Team. Alcaraz was the Captain of the Men’s Soccer team and completed his career at Shoreline with an outstanding season up top for the Phins. Alcaraz finished in the top 20 in the NWAC in both goals scored as well as total points. He led the Phins in both categories. Alcaraz participated in the NWAC All-Star game on Sunday, November 13th where he was instrumental in leading the North-East All-Star team to a 5-1 victory. Alcaraz recorded two assists in the game played in front of a number of 4 year University coaches.
The Women’s Soccer team qualified for the NWAC Tournament for the 3rd straight year in 2016 and two players were recognized for their outstanding seasons. Sophomore Captain Rikki Quintero did it all for the Phins in her second season. Quintero could be found lined up all over the field as she spent time as a right sided defender, midfielder and attacker. Quintero scored 1 goal on the season in her new attacking role after spending much of 2015 as a defensive midfielder. Quintero is getting recruitng interest from a number of 4 year Universities. Freshmen Captain Lex Simmons led the back line where she started in central defense for the 2016 season. Simmons also found her way into the attack with 2 goals and a team leading 5 assists on the season. Simmons returns for the 2017 season along with a number of quality Freshmen players.
Two Sophomore Soccer players were also recognized for their work in the classroom. Tayler Lime and Naza Hernandez were both awarded the NWAC Academic Excellence Award for the Fall Sports Season. Lime had an injury plagued season but was still able to score 3 goals on the season and finish second on the team in North Region Goals scored. Lime was recognized by the NWAC for her 3.63 overall GPA. Hernandez started every game in goal for the Phins and had an outstanding year. Hernandez finished in the top 20 in saves with 79 on the year in the top 10 in shut outs with 4. Hernandez was recognized for her 3.44 GPA.
Volleyball finished in 2nd place in the North Region and closed out their regular season with a 9 match winning streak. The Phins open the NWAC Championships with a match against Chemeketa on Thursday, November 17th at 2pm at the Tacoma Convention Center. A number of Phins have been recognized by the North Region coaches for their successful 2016 season. Leading the way for the Phins was Sophomore Outside Hitter Taylor Alexander. Alexander was named the MVP of the North Region after a season in which she led the Phins in Kills, Attack Percentage, Serves, and Service Aces. Alexander was also top 3 on the team in digs and blocks. Sophomore Setter Carlie Howard joined Alexander on the All-North Region 1st Team. Howard started every game for the Phins at Setter this season. Howard lead the team in Assists and was second in Service Aces.
Sophomore Middle Blocker Kristina Nielsen was honored on the All-North Region 2nd Team. Nielsen was 2nd in the team in Blocks and Kills. All three Phins honored on the North Region All-Star teams will participate in the Sophomore All-Star game at the NWAC Championships. The remaining members of the Phintastic Five – Kyla Pitzman and Josie Dalrymple – will also represent Shoreline in the Sophomore All-Star team.Taylor Alexander and Carlie Howard were also recognized with the NWAC Academic Excellence Award. Alexander currently hold a 3.66 overall GPA while Howard holds a 3.37.
