Men’s and Women’s Basketball opened their official schedule over the weekend taking their first step towards the NWAC Championships in March. Women’s Basketball opened their season against defending East Region Champion Wenatchee Valley on Saturday, November 19th. Shoreline held Wenatchee to just 36% shooting and less than a point per possession, but struggled to score on the other end. After keeping the 1st quarter close the Phins fell behind in the 2nd quarter and went into the half down 15. The Phins fared better in the second half but could not make up for their first half offensive struggles eventually dropping the game 39-61.
The Phins were led offensively by Enjunay Jones-Lee’s 17 points. Jones-Lee also added 6 rebounds. Jamia Moore scored 7 points and led the team with 7 rebounds. Paris Sanders also helped out on the glass with 5 rebounds and 4 points. Point Guard Janaya Williams scored 8 points and also grabbed 5 rebounds.
On Tuesday, November 22nd the Phins hosted Grays Harbor. This time the Phins controlled the first half leading 21-19 after the 1st quarter and 39-36 at the half. Grays Harbor came out aggressively with a 21-11 3rd quarter and took the lead from the Phins. Shoreline battled back in a high scoring 4th quarter but lost in the end 81-84. Shoreline was again led in scoring by Jones-Lee as she poured in 21 points. Shantell McMillon and Jamia Moore each added 15 points. Moore led the team with 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Shoreline is now 0-2 on the early season. The Phins host a game on Friday, November 25th when they take on Portland at 6pm.
Men’s Basketball began their season with two long road trips taking on teams from the East Region and the West Region. On Saturday, November 19th the Phins traveled to Wenatchee Valley to open their season. The Phins started the game on a 9-0 run but a switch to zone defense by Wenatchee slowed the Phins down. Wenatchee held a 4 point lead at the half and extended their lead to 12 in the second half. The Phins were still down 10 points with 3 minutes to go when they finally made a run at Wenatchee. Ben Steinbrueck knocked down to free throws then followed it up with a 3 on the next possession. Abdul Mohamad got a deflection and a steal leading to a fast break lay up cutting the Wenatchee lead to 3 points. CJ Bussey knocked down two free throws and the Phins got one more stop to get possession of the ball with less than 30 seconds. After a scrum under the Shoreline basket the Phins were awarded the ball on the baseline with 9 seconds to go. On the ensuing in-bounds Joe Ghebrehiwot found himself open under the basket for the game winning lay up as the Phins escaped with a 65-64 victory.
The next night Shoreline traveled to Aberdeen to take on Grays Harbor. In another tight match up the Phins again made the key plays down the stretch to come away with a tough road win. Derrik Dean led the Phins with 19 points and 4 rebounds. Abdul Mohamad added 16 points and 2 steals. Ben Steinbrueck led the Phins with 5 assists to go with his 12 points.
Shoreline is now 2-0 on the season. The Phins travel to Highline on Saturday, November 26th for a 7pm game and then to Tacoma on December 6th in a doubleheader with the Women’s team starting at 5pm.
