The Shoreline Dolphins Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams competed over the Thanksgiving break with early season contests against teams from the West and South Regions, respectively. Women’s Basketball kicked off the weekend with a game on Friday, November 25th against Portland of the South Region. The Phins jumped out to an 18-10 lead after the 1st quarter and never looked back. Shoreline had a 32-20 lead at the half that they extended in the 3rd quarter to 52-36. Portland showed some life in the 4th quarter to make the final score a little closer, but the Phins controlled the game throughout and came away with their first victory of the year by a final score of 67-56.
The story of the game was the stifling Phins’ defense. Shoreline forced 30 turnovers and scored 27 points off of turnovers. The Phins also held Portland to just 26% shooting on the game. Enjunay Jones-Lee led the Phins with 28 points and added 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Dani Hayes led the Phins with 10 assists, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Jamia Moore was the only other Phin in double figures with 14 points to go with her 5 rebounds. Janaya Williams scored 9 points and dished out 5 assists while Paris Sanders grabbed 6 rebounds and had 2 steals. Nine different Phins scored in what was a complete team win.
The win improves the Phins to 1-2 on the early season. Shoreline hosts Green River from the West Region on Wednesday, November 30th at 6pm. The Phins host Clark on Saturday, December 3rd at 2pm. The next road game for the Phins is a doubleheader with the Men’s team at Tacoma on Tuesday, December 6th with the Women tipping off at 5pm and the Men following at 7pm.
Men’s Basketball traveled to Des Moines on Saturday, November 27th for a match up with West Region powerhouse Highline. The Phins took a page from the Women’s team and used their defense to control the game. Shoreline forced 22 turnovers that they converted to 21 points. The Phins held Highline to just 30% shooting on the night and won the rebound battle 46-35. Shoreline took a 47-23 lead into the half and although the pace slowed down a bit in the 2nd half Shoreline was able to hold on for a 72-50 victory.
Ben Steinbrueck led Shoreline with a double-double in points and rebounds with 13 and 12. He also added 5 assists and 2 steals. Payton Tirrell came off the bench to get his own double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Derrik Dean led the remaining 3 Phins in double figures with 12 points. Joe Ghebrehiwot scored 11 points and pulled in 3 boards. Jacob Perkins added 10 points including a monster dunk on the back line of Highline’s zone.
The win moves Shoreline to 3-0 on the season. The Phins are off to the best start for the Men’s Basketball program in 12 years. Their next game is a road match up with Tacoma on Tuesday, December 6th at 5pm.
