As the Fall Quarter winds down our Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams have kept busy on the court. Both teams close out 2016 with their respective NWAC Crossover Tournaments over the weekend of December 16th-18th. Here is a recap of teach team’s last few contests.
Women’s Basketball hosted Clark on December 3rd. The Phins controlled most of the game with a half time lead of 31-28 that they extended to 4 points at the end of the 3rd quarter. Clark came back in the 4th quarter closing out the game with a 20-11 quarter and taking the game by a final score of 63-58. The Phins were done in by 30 turnovers and gave up 18 offensive rebounds to Clark. Shoreline was led in scoring by Jamia Moore’s 18 points. Enjunay Jones-Lee added 12 points and 8 rebounds. Paris Sanders scored 6 points and led the team with 10 rebounds. Dani Hayes had 11 assists on the game.
On December 6th the Phins traveled to Tacoma to take on the 9th ranked Titans. The Phins held a 12-11 lead after the first quarter, but Tacoma took control in the 2nd quarter holding the Phins to just 4 points as they scored 21. Tacoma never allowed the Phins back in the contest and came away with a 64-42 victory. Janaya Williams led the Phins with 11 points. Sanders again grabbed 10 rebounds in the game.
The Phins are now 2-4 on the season and travel to South Puget Sound for their round-robbin NWAC Crossover. Shoreline takes on host South Puget Sound on Friday, December 16th at 8pm. The Phins play Treasure Valley on Saturday, December 17th at 5:00pm. On Sunday, December 18th the Phins close out the Crossover witha game against Linn-Benton at 12pm. Shoreline hosts a home game on Monday, December 19th at 5:00pm against George Fox University.
Men’s Basketball also traveled to Tacoma on Tuesday, December 6th. The Phins came into the game with a 3-0 record as the last undefeated team in the NWAC. Shoreline fell behind early and was never able to recover. Tacoma shot 50% from the 3 point line and their hot shooting led to an 85-71 defeat for the Phins. Shoreline was led in scoring by Abdul Mohamed, Derrik Dean and CJ Bussey who all scored 11 points in the contest.
Despite the loss the Phins were ranked 8th in the first Under Armour NWAC Coaches Poll of the season. The Phins next took on Chemeketa in the Bellevue College Holiday Tournament. In a total team effort the Phins held one of the NWAC’s highest scoring teams to just 64 points and 29% shooting. Shoreline had 12 players score as they won the contest 95-64. Jacob Perkins led the Phins with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Anddrew hawkins scored 15 points in his first game of the season. Derrik Dean was the nly other Phin in double figures with 10 points. Will Luckett also had 10 rebounds in the game.
Next up the Phins took on Highline in the semifinals of the tournament on Saturday, December 10th. Shoreline had previously beat Highline by a score of 72-50. This time around Highline was the aggressor. Shoreline was down 48-31 after the first half and despite coming back to within two points on three separate occasions the Phins could never recover from their slow start. Shoreline dropped the game 68-73. Hawkins led the Phins with 16 points and 4 assists. Abdul Mohamed was the only other Shoreline player with double digits in scoring finishing with 11.
On Sunday, December 11th the Phins took on Walla Walla in the 3rd place game. In what is becoming a bad trend the Phins again started the game slowly. The Phins faced a double digit half time deficit for the second straight day but this time had no come back in them. Shoreline fell to Walla Walla 61-78. CJ Bussey led the Phins with 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Will Lucket had a near double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds.
The #8 Phins are now 4-3 on the year and travel to Longview, Washington for the Lower Columbia NWAC Crossover. Shoreline gets a second chance against Walla Walla on Friday, December 16th at 6pm. On Saturday, December 17th the Phins take on Portland at 6pm. On Sunday, December 18th the Phins play host Lower Columbia at 2pm.
