The Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams took to the road over the weekend for their annual NWAC Crossover tournament. Men’s Basketball traveled to Longview, Washington and the campus of Lower Columbia College to take on the host school as well as Walla Walla and Portland. The Phins opened the tournament with a rematch against Walla Walla on Friday, December 16th. The teams had previously met in the Bellevue College Holiday Tournament less than a week ago. In that contest Walla Walla controlled the game from the jump taking the #8th ranked Phins out by a score of 78-61. This time around it was the Phins that jumped out to a great start as they took a 46-32 lead into the half. Shoreline would go onto win by a score of 97-74. The Phins were led by 18 points and 12 rebounds from Anddrew Hawkins. Joe Ghebrehiwot provided the spark off the bench to score 18 points in just 11 minutes. Dana Abe marked his Shoreline debut with 16 points and 7 rebounds. The back court trio of Abdul Mohamed, Ben Steinbrueck and Derrik Dean combined for 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists.
On Saturday, December 17th the Phins took on Portland. The Phins held a 5 point lead with just under 4 minutes to play, but could not hold on down the stretch as Shoreline’s offense went cold in the waning minutes. Portland came back to win 74-68. Dean led the Phins in defeat with 12 points and 6 assists. Abe added 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Hawkins and Jacob Perkins were the only other Phins in double figures with 10 points a piece.
The Phins closed out their Crossover with a game against host Lower Columbia. A tight game throughout the first half saw the Phins take a 1 point lead into the break. In the second half Shoreline extended their lead to as many as 13, but Lower Columbia would not give up easy. The Red Devils came all the way to within 2 points with less than two minutes to play, but Shoreline held on with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch for a 74-70 victory. Abe led all scorers with 30 points and a team leading 9 rebounds. Perkins added 14 points and 6 boards. Will Luckett had 7 rebounds and 3 huge blocks. Hawkins scored 8 points and led the team with 4 steals.
Shoreline heads into winter break with a 6-4 record overall. The Phins will travel to Columbia Basin College on Thursday, December 29th for a 3pm game. The Phins will kick off their home and North Region schedule with a game against defending North Region Champions Peninsula College on Wednesday, January 11th at 7:30pm.
Women’s Basketball played their NWAC Crossover at West Region school South Puget Sound. The Phins opened their weekend against the host school on Friday, December 16th. The Phins held a lead at the end of each of the first 3 quarters, but South Puget Sound was able to close the gap and tie the game with only second remaining. South Puget Sound completed their come from behind victory with a last second shot to steal a win from Shoreline by a a score of 65-63. Brea Woods led the Phins with 18 points. Jamia Moore scored 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Dani Hayes led the team with 7 assists and added 9 points.
The Phins took on Treasure Valley from the East region on Saturday, December 17th. Shoreline jumped out to a big lead and were up 15-1 after the 1st quarter. Treasure Valley fought back in the 2nd quarter to pull within 1 point at the half. Shoreline could not match the Treasure Valley run in the second half and dropped the game 54-63. Enjunay Jones-Lee led the Phins with 11 points. Paris Sanders had a near double-double with 8 points and a team leading 10 rebounds. Woods again provided a spark off the bench with 10 points and Hayes was the only other Phin in double figures with 10 points of her own.
On Sunday, December 18th the Phins took on Linn-Benton from the South Region. This time around it was Linn-Benton with the fast start as they raced out to a 34-22 half time lead. The Phins played Linn-Benton to a 15-15 3rd quarter but were unable to make up their early deficit eventually losing by a score of 50-72. Janaya Williams led the Phins with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Hayes added 10 points and, 5 steals and 3 assists.
The Phins are now 2-7 on the season. Shoreline hosts George Fox University JV today, Monday, December 19th at 5pm. The Phins open their North Region schedule on Wednesday, January 11th at 5:30pm.
