Men’s and Women’s Basketball Drop North Region Openers

Men’s and Women’s Basketball opened their North Region schedule on Wednesday, January 13th with a home double header against Peninsula College. Both programs from Peninsula College won the North Region in 2016 and began their title defense on Wednesday night. Women’s Basketball started the double header and the Phins promptly jumped out to take an 11-7 lead after the 1st quarter. Peninsula made a run in the 2nd quarter to take a half time lead of 32-26 which the Phins could not overcome. Peninsula controlled the second half and Shoreline dropped the game 61-80.

In the loss Shoreline was led by Enjunay Jones-Lee and her 29 points including 11-11 from the free throw line. Dani Hayes scored 13 points as the only other player in double figures. Paris Sanders and Janaya Williams led the team with 5 rebounds.

With the loss the Phins drop to 3-8 on the year and 0-1 in the North Region. Shoreline travels to Whatcom on Saturday, January 14th for a 1pm tip off. Their next home game is Wednesday, January 18th against Edmonds at 5:30pm.

Men’s Basketball took on the 7th ranked Peninsula College Pirates in the second game of the Wednesday night double header. Peninsula controlled the first half jumping out to a 30-17 lead – the largest of the half and the game. Shoreline turned up their defensive pressure and finished the half on a 17-9 run to pull within 5 points at the break. The Phins scored the first 5 points of the second half to tie the game at 39 and gegin an epic back and forth battle. The game included 19 lead changes and 18 ties as the teams battled into double overtime. In the last over time Peninsula pulled away slightly and hit clutch free throws down the stretch on their way to a 116-108 victory.

In the loss the Phins were led by Dana Abe’s 35 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Derrik Dean came off the bench to score 17 points and hand out 9 assists. Anddrew Hawkins added 17 points to go with his team leading 8 rebounds. Ben Steinbrueck scored 6 points and dished 8 assists.

The Phins drop to 7-5 on the season and 0-1 in the North Region. Shoreline travels to Whatcom on Saturday, January 14th for a 3pm tip off. The Phins host Edmonds on Wednesday, January 18th at 7:30pm.
