Men’s and Women’s Basketball Sweep Whatcom

Men’s and Women’s Basketball each opened North Region play with tough losses to Peninsula College. On Saturday, January 17th the Phins traveled to Whatcom for a North Region doubleheader. Women’s Basketball started slow after the drive to Bellingham trailing after the first quarter by a score of 14-11. Shoreline trailed by one at the half, but used a dominating 3rd quarter to take control of the game. The Phins turned up the pace and their defense holding Whatcom to just 13 points as Shoreline scored 26 in the period. The Phins held on in the 4th and came away with a big 80-75 road victory.

The Phins had 9 different players score in what was a complete team win. Shoreline was led in scoring by Enjunay Jones-Lee and her 21 points. Jones-Lee also dished out a team high 7 assists and helped on the boards with 5 rebounds. Paris Sanders recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The back court duo of Janaya Williams and Dani Hayes turned in a great all around performance. Williams scored 12 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, had 5 steals and 6 assists. Hayes scored 9 points, and had 5 steals to go with her 5 assists. Betty Alem and Jamia Moore rounded out the double figure scoring for the Phins as they each scored 10.

Shoreline is now 4-8 on the year and 1-1 in the North Region. The Phins have two big home games this week. On Wednesday, January 18th at 5:30pm the Phins host Edmonds. On Saturday, January 21st Shoreline welcomes Skagit Valley for a 2pm tip off.

Men’s Basketball started even slower than the women. Shoreline started the game down 15-6 and only shot 32% in the 1st half. The Phins trailed by 7 at the half, but used a 9-2 run to start the second half to even the score at 34 heading down the stretch. Whatcom would take one more large lead as they extended out to a 53-45 advantage with just under 9 minutes to play. However, the Phins finished the game on 22-9 run for a 67-62 win. The story of the game was the Phins’ defense. Shoreline forced 20 turn overs and held Whatcom to just 30% shooting for the game. Shoreline’s offense hetaed up in the second half after a poor shooting first half. The Phins went 7-10 from 3 in the second half and shot 50% over all in the final stanza.

Shoreline was led in scoring and rebounding by Dana Abe and his 20 points with 12 rebounds. Anddrew Hawkins added 14 points and 6 rebounds. Will Luckett grabbed 10 big boards to go with his 4 points. Ben Steinbrueck scored 12 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and led the team with 4 assists.

Shoreline is now 8-5 on the year and 1-1 in the North Region. The Phins host Edmonds on Wednesday, January 18th at 7:30pm and Skagit Valley on Saturday, January 21st at 4:oopm.
