Men’s and Women’s Basketball played their 3rd straight North Region game on the road with a trip to Everett Community College on Wednesday, February 1st. The Wednesday night contest closed out the first round of North Region play for both teams. The top 4 teams automatically qualify for the NWAC Tournament and our Men and Women are right in the thick of the race for one of the 4 coveted spots.
Women’s Basketball came into their game with Everett tied for 4th place with the Trojans at 3-3 in the North Region. In the biggest game of their season to date the Phins came out focused and ready – Shoreline took a 22-10 lead after the 1st quarter. To start the second half the Phins still hung onto a 9 point lead, but Everett would quickly erase the deficit in the early moments of the 3rd quarter setting up a back and forth battle for the final two quarters. Everett took final control of the game in the last minutes and hit clutch free throws down the stretch to hold onto a 61-55 victory.
In the loss the Phins were led by Enjunay Jones-Lee’s 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Paris Sanders led the Phins with 11 rebounds to go with her 6 points. Betty Alem scored 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field. Janaya Williams scored 9 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and dished out 4 assists.
The Phins are now 3-4 in the North Region and 6-11 overall. The Phins are one game behind Everett for 4th place heading into the second half of North Region play. Shoreline begins the second half tilt with a trip to Port Angeles on Wednesday, February 8th for a game against 1st place Peninsula. The Phins return home for the first time since January 21st with a home game against Whatcom on Saturday, February 11th at 2pm.
Men’s Basketball entered their game with Everett in a 4 way tie for 3rd place with Everett, Bellevue and Skagit Valley. In a very competitive North Region 7 of the 8 teams came into the final night of the first round within 3 games of each other. In the first half Everett and Shoreline took turns making runs at each other with neither team taking more than a 6 point lead. Shoreline led 38-35 at the half and ran out to a 19 point lead early in the second stanza. Everett slowly chipped away at the Shoreline lead eventually pulling within 4 points with a minute and a half to go in the game. On the ensuing possession Dana Abe hit a deep jumper and following a Shoreline defensive stop Anddrew Hawkins went 2-2 from the foul line to secure an 83-75 victory.
The Phins were led by Abe’s 34 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Abdul Mohamed scored 16 points on 6-6 shooting from the field to go with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Ben Steinbrueck and Anddrew Hawkins combined for 18 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists. Jacob Perkins controlled the glass with 8 rebounds.
Shoreline is now 4-3 in the North Region and 11-7 overall. The Phins sit in a 4 way tie for 2nd place just 2 games back of first place Peninsula. Shoreline has a chance to close the gap on Peninsula in their next game – a road trip to Port Angeles to take on the Pirates on Wednesday, February 8th at 7pm. The Phins’ next home game is Saturday, February 11th at 4pm against Whatcom.
