Men’s Basketball Takes Down 1st Place Peninsula – Women Drop 1 on the Road

The Shoreline Dolphins Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams traveled to Port Angeles to take on the Pirates of Peninsula College on Wednesday, February 8th. Our basketball teams have been road warriors with 4 straight away games during their North Region slate.

Men’s Basketball entered their contest with Peninsula in a 4 way tie for second place after the first round of North Region play. Peninsula completed the first round with a 6-1 record and a 2 game lead over the group chasing them for the top spot in the region – enough to earn the Pirates the #4 ranking in the latest Under Armour NWAC Coaches Poll. The Phins used a stifling defense to limit Peninsula to just 25% shooting and 51 points for the game. Although Shoreline only connected on 35% of their shots – the Phins did just enough to earn a tough 58-51 win on the road.

Shoreline was led by 22 points and 6 rebounds from Dana Abe. Ben Steinbrueck scored 8 points, including the game clinching 3 point shot in the final minute of play, and grabbed 6 rebounds. Jacob Perkins controlled the paint with 8 points and 6 rebounds while Anddrew Hawkins added 9 points. Abdul Mohamed turned in the performance of the game limiting Peninsula’s leading scorer to just 5 points on 2 for 15 shooting on the night.

In the midst of their 3 game win streak the Phins were recognized by the NWAC as Dana Abe was named the Under Armour Player of the Week for the entire NWAC. The Phins are now 5-3 in the North Region and  12-7 overall. Shoreline trails Peninsula by 1 game for 1st place and is currently in a 3 way tie for 2nd with Bellevue and Skagit Valley. The Phins return home for the first time since January 21st as they host Whatcom on Saturday, February 11th at 4pm.

After 4 games in North Region play Women’s Basketball found themselves in a 4 way tie for 1st place heading into their 4 game road trip. Unfortunately the road has not been kind to the Phins as Shoreline came into their game against Peninsula having dropped their last 3 games all by single digit deficits. The long road trip to Port Angeles had an effect on the Phins’ legs as they started slowly falling behind 6-29 after the 1st quarter. Shoreline could never recover from the early deficit as they could only manage 22% shooting for the game. The Phins eventually lost 44-83.

In the defeat the Phins were led by 13 points from Enjunay Jones-Lee. Janaya Williams led the Phins with 8 rebounds to go with her 5 points and 3 steals. Shoreline is now 3-5 in the North Region and trails Everett by 2 games for the 4th and final NWAC Tournament birth. The Phins host Whatcom on Saturday, February 11th at 2pm.
