Men’s and Women’s Basketball played their last 4 games on the road but finally returned home to host Whatcom on Saturday, February 11th in two important North Region match ups. Both teams won their first round game against Whatcom with the Women defeating the Orcas by a score of 80-75 and the Men pulling out a 67-62 come from behind victory.
Women’s Basketball struggled in their road games away from the friendly confines of The Aquarium. The Phins came into Saturday having dropped their last 4 games and needing a win to stay in the NWAC playoff race. Shoreline needed all 40 minutes – plus a little extra – to get a tough 63-62 win. The Dolphins and the Orcas battled back and forth through the first 3 quarters – Shoreline held a 1 point lead after the first, but Whatcom would take a 5 point lead into the half. The Phins dominated the 3rd quarter holding Whatcom to just 8 points on their way to a 59-52 lead entering the 4th quarter. However, Whatcom was not done yet and exploded for a 20 point 4th quarter. The game was tied with a minute to go when the Phins produced a defensive stop and a much needed rebound from Paris Sanders. After a time out Enjunay Jones-Lee got the ball with less than 5 seconds remaining, she drove hard right and pulled up to shoot from just inside the 3 point line – her shot was off but she was fouled on the attempt. With no time remaining on the clock Jones-Lee stepped up to the line and hit the game winning free throw.
The Phins were led in scoring by Brea Woods who came off the bench to score 18 points all on 6 3-pointers. Jones-Lee finished with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Janaya Williams scored 7 points grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out 6 assists. Paris Sanders scored 5 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. With the win the Phins remain two games out of 4th place in the North Region. Shoreline is now 4-5 in the North region and 7-12 overall. The Phins travel to Edmonds on Wednesday, February 15th for a 5pm game.
Men’s Basketball entered their match up with Whatcom coming off a big win at 1st place Peninsula. The Phins fell behind 22-11 early in the 1st half and with leading scorer Dana Abe Shoreline relied on their bench to get back in the game. Payton Tirrell and Joe Ghebrehiwot each hit 2 3 pointers to help lead a come back that gave the Phins a 37-32 half time lead. The teams played each other close in the second half as the Phins held on for a 69-64 victory.
All 12 Shoreline players that entered the game scored for the Phins. Shoreline scored 37 points off the bench and in the balanced attack only Anddrew Hawkins made his way to double figures with 11 points to go with a team leading 7 rebounds. CJ Bussey and Ghebrehiwot each added 8 points. Ben Steinbrueck scored 5 points and led the team with 7 assists.
The win keeps Shoreline in a 2 way tie for 2nd place with Bellevue. Both teams trail Peninsula by 1 game for 1st place in the North Region standings. Shoreline is now 6-3 in the North Region and 13-7 overall. The Phins return to the road to take on Edmonds on Wednesday, February 15th at 7pm.
