Basketball Recap – 2/21/17

Men’s and Women’s Basketball made their final road trips of the season as they traveled to Mt. Vernon to take on Skagit Valley College. Both of our teams are in playoff contention as each game becomes more and more important down the stretch of the North Region schedule.

Women’s Basketball entered their contest with Skagit Valley just outside of the playoff picture – trailing Everett and Bellevue by 2 games with 4 to go. In their previous match up the Phins gave 1st place Skagit Valley one of their 2 losses in league. This time around the Phins never quite got in an offensive rhythm on the road. The Phins shot just 24% from the field and had 18 turnovers in the game. Shoreline never recovered from an 18-8 deficit after the first quarter eventually falling 41-71.

The Phins were led by Janaya Williams and her 14 points and 6 rebounds. Enjunay Jones-Lee added 11 points. Paris Sanders dominated the boards with 15 rebounds. The Phins are now 5-6 in the North Region and 8-13 overall. Shoreline trails Bellevue College by 2 games with 3 remaining. The Phins host Bellevue on Wednesday, February 22nd at 5:30pm in their biggest game of the year. The Phins face a must win situation as a loss would eliminate them from the NWAC Tournament. Wednesday night also marks the annual “Pack the Stands Night” as the first 100 fans will receive a Shoreline “Game Day” tshirt!

Men’s Basketball came into their game with Skagit on a 5 game win streak and in a 3 way tie for 1st place with Bellevue and Peninsula. In their first round match up Skagit beat the Phins in an overtime thriller by a final score of 85-82. Skagit started hot again on Wednesday taking a 9 point lead in the first half on 45% shooting. The Phins finished the 1st half on a little run to pull within 2 points at the break. In the 2nd half Shoreline tightened up their defense holding Skagit to just 26% shooting while not allowing a 3 point field goal. The Phins woke up offensively going 62% from the floor and 45% from 3 on their way to a 84-71 victory.

The Phins were led by 24 points from Dana Abe. Abe also added a team leading 8 rebounds. Anddrew Hawkins scored 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Jacob Perkins went 5-5 from the field to score 11 points with his 7 rebounds. Point Guard Ben Steinbrueck scored 11 points and led the team with 7 assists. Abdul Mohamed was the only other Phin in double firgures with 10 points.

The Phins are now 8-3 in the North Region and 15-7 overall. Shoreline remains in a tie for 1st place with Peninsula College with 3 games remaining in the league schedule. On Wednesday, February 22nd the Phins host Bellevue College at 7:30pm on “Pack the Stand Night”.
