Baseball Opens Up 4-0

Baseball opened the first week of their season with two inter-regional doubleheaders. On Wednesday, March 1st the Phins hosted Centralia from the West Region. In game 1 the Phins started Trey Lopez on the bump and got a quality performance from the Freshmen. Lopez had an efficient outing, throwing just 79 pitches through 7 and 2/3s innings. Lopez scattered 4 hits during his start allowing just 1 run on wis way to a win. Tyler Wingert came in to get the last out of the 7th and closed out the 8th allowing just 1 base runner for the save. The Phins got just enough offensive production scoring 3 runs on 8 hits to pull out a 3-2 victory. David Becker went 2 for 4 at the plate with a triple and a run scored. Harrison Jacobs went 2 for 4 and produced 2 RBIs.

In game 2 the Phins capitalized on their hit production scoring 7 runs on 11 hits. Kory Longaker, David McLaurin, Chris Watkins, and Jacobs each had multi hit games. Sheldon Rouzan had 3 RBIs. Becker reached base three times with a hit and two walks. Sean Ferdig pitched 6 and 2/3s shutout innings allowing only 3 hits. Trevor Clark and Tyler Navoni combined to get the last 7 outs of the game as the Phins won by a score of 7-0.

On Sunday, March 5th the Phins hosted another West Region foe in Green River. Through snow, rain and ice the teams were able to complete both games. In game 1 the Phins started power pitcher Trevor Clark. Clark gave up 1 run in the first inning after walking two batters, but settled down and held Green River scoreless over the next 5 innings while striking out 11. Derek Campbell pitched the final 3 innings without allowing a run. The Phins scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st and added an insurance run in the 5th securing a 4-1 victory. Becker went 2 for 3 with a double, 3 stolen bases, and 2 runs scored. Jacobs had a 2 RBI triple and a run scored.

In game 2 the Phins only needed 7 innings to 10 run rule Green River. Becker once again led the way with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Watkins added 3 doubles of his own along with 3 RBIs. All but one Shoreline hitter reached base safely as the Phins had a season high 12 hits. Brandon Paust got the start and the win pitching 4 scoreless innings. Kyler Schemstad and Bryce Foster combined to pitch the last 3 innings allowing only 1 base runner.

The Phins are now 4-0 on the early season. They travel to Pendleton, Oregon to take on Blue Mountain on Saturday, March 11th then take on Walla Wallla on Sunday, March 12th. The Phins host Thompson River on Saturday, march 18th at 7:30pm at Bannerwood Park and then host a doubleheader with the same opponent on Sunday, march 19th at Meridian at 12:30pm.
