Spring Sports Recap

Baseball and Softball are in full swing and each program took to the road over the weekend for some cross-region match ups. Baseball opened their season 4-0 with doubleheader sweeps of West Region teams Centralia and Green River. On Saturday, March 11th the Phins braved mountain passes to travel to Pendleton, Oregon for a doubleheader against Blue Mountain out of the East Region. In game 1 the Phins committed 6 errors leading to 5 unearned runs. Despite their defensive woes the Phins had come back to take a 6-5 lead after Austin Holm scored in the top of the 8th inning. But two errors in the bottom of the 9th led to 2 runs scored by Blue Mountain and the Phins dropped the game 6-7.

In the loss the Phins were led offensively by Kory Longaker. Longaker went 2-3 from the plate with a double and 3 runs scored. Trey Lopez pitched a solid 6 innings only allowing 5 hits and 2 earned runs to keep his ERA below 2 at 1.98. Tyler Wingert came in to pitch 2 and 2/3rds innings in relief allowing no earned runs.

In Game 2 the Phins scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th to get a 10-9 come from behind win to split the doubleheader. Eight different Shoreline batters had hits – led by Conner Walker’s 2 doubles and 5 RBIs. Harrison Jacobs had 2 hits and scored 2 runs.

On Sunday, March 12th the Phins took on Walla Walla in another doubleheader with an East Region foe. Shoreline scored a staggering 13 runs combined in the 2nd and 3rd innings and tacked 2 more on in the top of the 7th as they took the first game 15-4. The Phins had big games up and down the line up led by 4 hits and 3 runs scored from Right Fielder Jacobs. Zach Zurbrugg also had 4 hits to go with 2 runs scored. David Becker led the team with 4 RBIs.

In game 2 the Phins could not generate the same offense settling for a split by a score of 3-6. Longaker again led the offense from his lead off spot with 3 hits and 2 RBIs. Becker had 2 hits and an RBI. The Phins are now 6-2 on the season and travel to Lakewood on Thursday, March 15th to take on Pierce Community College. Shoreline returns home for a doubleheader against Thompson River on Sunday, March 19th with the first pitch at 12:30pm.

Softball opened their season with a cross-regional event in Lacey, Washington on March 11th and 12th. The Phins opened their season with a 9-4 victory over Clark. In their 2nd game the Phins took on another South Region program in Chemeketa. Shoreline fell behind early but came back to take a 5-2 lead after the bottom of the 5th. Unfortunately the Phins gave up 5 runs in the 6th and 7th innings to drop the game by a final of 5-7.

On Sunday, March 12 the Phins continued their tour of the South Region with a game against Mt. Hood. The Saints jumped on the Phins early and never looked back eventually taking the game 7-2. Shoreline closed out their weekend against Centralia out of the West Region. In a back and forth game that saw 3 lead changes and 1 tie the Phins fell behind late and dropped the contest by a final score of 10-7.

The Phins are 1-3 on the early season. They begin North Region play on Thursday, March 16th with a trip to Edmonds. First pitch of the doubleheader is 4pm. Shoreline returns home to host Highline on Sunday, March 19th at 12:00pm.
